Have you ever found yourself in a place where you were whispering to another person about someone or something you heard that shouldn’t have been repeated? If so, NEWSLFLASH! That’s GOSSIP. I know that can be a hard confession, but it’s good to know that about yourself, so you can overcome it. I also need to mention here that gossip can destroy the best of friends, ruin your reputation, and stain your character. It’s true! It’s like a cancer that spreads rapidly and hurts people and you. That’s why it’s so important to cut it at the root…which stems from the heart.

God tells us in Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” God knows! And the Bible also tells us in Matthew 12:34, “The mouth speaks the abundance of the heart.” There you have it! God know us from the inside out and our mouths let other people know what we really feel in our hearts. So learn to fight the temptation to say something juicy, spread a rumor about someone, or whisper something you shouldn’t say. Surrender it to God and cut it out.

Actually, I think all of us at some point in our lives have been guilty of gossiping. Whether it was in the teenage years, young adult stage of life, in the workplace, or even at church, it has happened…unfortunately. Nevertheless, it’s sin. And sin is only pleasurable for a season.

Furthermore, you don’t want to be known or remembered as a gossip, whisperer, or talebearer. You don’t want people to run away from you, because you don’t know how to keep your mouth shut about other people or things that are not supposed to be spoken about. Proverbs 11:13 says, “A gossip goes around revealing secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.” (NLT) You want to be found trustworthy. So gossip has to go!

With that being said, the next time you feel the urge to gossip (because you will be tested on it – we all do), fight it and say to yourself, “No, I won’t do it. Jesus, help me.” Avoid it. Switch the conversation. And if someone else tries to draw you into it, don’t let them. Instead, as the Holy Spirit leads you, let that individual know gently that it’s not right to gossip. Proverbs 16:38 reminds us, “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.” (NLT) Again, don’t let the poison of gossip ruin a good reputation and healthy relationships.

I want to say something right here. If you struggle with gossip, confess it to God right now and repent today. Jesus is willing and ready to forgive you and help you. At the end of this life, you want to be an overcomer! Amen. On that note, if you know someone who needs to read this post, forward it to them. Even if it’s a women’s group, do it. Because whatever we do, we have to learn how to cut gossip at the root in these last days!

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved. So let’s be ready from the Inside Out!
