Me, My iPhone, and God

I recently got an iPhone.

Truthfully, I went back on forth about it in my mind countless times before I finally signed on the dotted line.  As much as I appreciate all that it can do, I still have Perpetual iPhone Ambivalence.  I love it!  I worry about being leashed to it!

Recently, yet another friend, H.,  was happily extolling its virtues and was showing me the maps app:

H:  “I love having the internet on me at all times.  If I get lost, I just type in where I am and (tapping maps) voila!…now I know where to go.  The GPS is always on.”

Me:  “So, it’s like a security blanket?”

H:  “Um, kind of.”

I can see the appeal of that.  What a great feeling to know that no matter where you are, you can’t ever really get lost.  The iPhone’s navigating system is just a touch away.

My friend’s comment made me think about having a GPS like that – not only for knowing which way to go, but also for knowing how to navigate the twists and turns of life.

For me, my life’s navigating system is slowly but surely turning into God’s word.

For years, and especially before I became a Christian, there were many ways I’d try to deal with challenges and setbacks.  Logic, reason, advice, counseling, girls’ night out, and Oprah. And those things definitely have an important role to play (okay, maybe not so much with Oprah).

But ultimately, I found that the more I read the Bible, the more God’s word became a living Counsel.  In just the right way, at just the right time, and just when I needed it.

I’ve come to find that His word, like a lamp unto my feet, is my own personal GPS.

What about you?

Do you have a navigating system for you?

Do you have a way to line yourself up and find your way back when life’s circumstances have turned you around?

We all have a default mode.  It’s what we fall back upon when we’re under stress or find ourselves in circumstances that push us out of our comfort zones.

There are many wonderful options for us to cope and recover when we’ve lost our way.  Make good use of them!

But for deep, eternal wisdom and for a compass that always points true north, hold onto God’s word and bury it into your heart.

No battery charge required!

Try it out:  Lock onto a verse from Scripture this week.  Write it on your heart, and see how God’s word will guide you in the days ahead.

Warmly,
