Finding Forgiveness and Healing After An Affair

Originally published Thursday, 30 May 2013.

Adultery is a hard subject to talk about, especially within the church. Marriage is a covenant, and breaking that covenant is seen as a particularly grievous sin. Yet, we read throughout the gospels Jesus’ tender mercy, healing and forgiveness for women who have found themselves swept up in adulteress relationships. Never justifying the sin, Jesus lovingly reaches into the heart of the issue- a lack of worship and commitment to their God and King- and graciously draws them back to himself. This is the power of our faith- no matter our sin, Jesus’ loving sacrifice has cleansed us all.

What sin do you bring here today? Maybe it’s an affair, or something else- our sins are varied, but our need is the same: Jesus’ healing grace.

Receiving this grace is the hope of TeamRedeemed.org, a project created by Rebecca Halton and Shelley Hendrix. Rebecca was the “other woman” in an extramarital affair. Shelley was the wife of a husband who cheated on her. Though their stories ought to have driven them away from one another, instead, they’ve come together to show others that there is hope and forgiveness to be found at the foot of the cross.

Rebecca has been very open about her affair with a married man. You can read and hear more about her story at her website. Shelley heard Rebecca’s testimony of God’s redemption and stepped forward with her own testimony of forgiveness and redemption. You can read more about Shelley here.

Together, they want you to know about hope in Christ, freedom through forgiveness and redemption through God’s love. They want to rally other people’s testimonies around the liberating power of Revelation 12:11  “They triumphed over him [the devil] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

We sat down with Shelley and Rebecca and talked about TeamRedeemed.org and what it means to find redemption and forgiveness through Christ, and healing after an affair. You can watch the video, embedded below, or you can watch it here
