In this life, we have two choices. We can go along with the temperature of our environment letting our minds and emotions be led by the twists and turns of the ever-changing scenarios of life, or we can set our hearts and minds on something higher and stable for our soul. I’m choosing the latter.
Calming my heart and mind is a daily action and requirement for my soul to be at peace. Work requirements, relationships hiccups, and daily life stressors are inevitable. So how do I equip myself to take care of my heart, mind, and soul before everything goes out of control?
For me, reading scriptures and meditating on the truth of the Bible helps to soothe my headaches and heartaches and prepare myself for the day ahead. Over the past 6 months, I have been taking one scripture at a time that is written out on a notecard and focusing on it every morning for one full week.
The monotony of scripture meditation that this entails helps to etch the precious words into my soul and long-term memory. It’s also amazing at all of the different insights you can glean from reading the same scripture multiple days in a row.
10 Bible Verses to Calm Your Anxiety
If you are interested in using some of the scriptures that have brought a sense of calmness to my own soul, here are 10 Bible verses, with my personal commentary, that I have grown to need like the air I breathe:
1. “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” (Proverbs 20:24)
- If I am living in God’s will for my life, then life as I see it won’t always make sense and that has got to be ok. Sometimes my path seems fuzzy but it’s calming to know I don’t have to understand everything.
2. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27)
- As a Christian, I have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of me. Sometimes, I don’t know how to verbally express the pain, questions, or needs in my prayers. The Spirit helps me when I am weak and speaks right to my Savior for me.
3. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
- Troubles in this world can make or break us. If we can fix our eyes on the eternity that is set before us after we leave this broken world, we can live a renewed and hopeful life. Getting excited about Heaven is the biggest type of giddy anticipation we can have!
4. “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. (Philippians 2:14-16)
- It’s very hard to go throughout life without grumbling or arguing. I’ve found that this scripture helps me to “catch” my bad moods and strive to shine as a positive light in my corner of the world. I want to be different in order to make a difference.
5. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)
- I am going to have hardships and reasons to worry, but worrying does not help a bit. Praying (communicating) with God while remembering my blessings, speaking out what could cause me to worry, and letting God take care of what I don’t understand are actions I can take. I then trust that His peace will guard my heart and mind.
6. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9)
- What we think about affects our bodies. It’s biological and a known fact. Thinking about what is true, good, right, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy sets up our minds up for healthy positivity. That transfers to our demeanor, our personality, and our relationships with others.
7. “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:16-17)
- When we teach, advise, and praise God, it’s hard for negativity to slide into our hearts. Doing everything in the name of Jesus is an excellent way to work on living alongside others in love.
8. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
- Your work is important no matter if you’re in the spotlight or behind the scenes. Do everything for God and you can’t be disappointed if people don’t recognize your efforts. You will receive an overwhelming reward from the Lord one glorious day.
9. “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:5-6)
- The way we interact with each other, fellow Christians and those that don’t know Christ, is very important. This reminds me to be graceful in my words and opinions and to pause before I respond. If I feel hesitation about saying something, then it’s best I probably don’t.
10. “Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:1-2)
- This is one of my favorite verses and reminds me to help and show hospitality to everyone I come in contact with - familiar and unfamiliar. Showing love towards others regardless of their background, looks, status, beliefs, and opinions is imperative. Every single person is important and you never know when an angel is looking your way.
