It can be hard at times to remember that God is our protector. Due to fears and insecurities, this truth often slips out of our minds. Instead of having comfort, peace, and security in knowing God is our protector, we allow fear to win. Rather than allowing fear to win, we need to turn back to the Bible and remember God is our protector. Psalms is a great book of the Bible that reminds us of this very truth. Here are five Psalms that remind us God is our protector.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” - Psalm 18:2
This first psalm Psalm 18:2, reminds us that God is our protector in many ways. The psalmist tells us that God is his rock, his deliverer, his refuge, his shield, the horn of his salvation, and his stronghold. Just as God is all these things to the psalmist, He is also all these things to us. We can rely on God for protection because He has never failed us in the past, and through this, we can be assured that He will never fail us in the future.
God protects us in many ways, often in ways we cannot perceive during our lifetimes. Maybe you were safely protected from a car wreck, or you went to a different grocery store because of time restraints, and the original store you would go to was robbed. Nothing happens by coincidence. Instead, God is protecting us in a myriad of ways as we go about our daily lives. Since we know God is our protector, we can rely on Him in every step we take. He is our rock, deliverer, refuge, shield, the horn of our salvation, and our stronghold.
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4
Psalm 23 is a beautiful Psalm that reminds us God is walking with us through every season of life. Even when times get tough and we go through our darkest valley, God is still there and protecting us as we walk this trek. He protects us with His rod and His staff. The Lord fights against evil and the world's problems to keep us safe. While God doesn't promise to keep us safe through every hardship, He does protect us in ways far beyond what we can comprehend.
What darkest valley are you walking through today? Maybe it's a job loss, a family member leaving the faith, or the death of a loved one. No matter your darkest valley, it is never too dark for God. He is walking right beside you and protecting you with His rod and staff. When deep sadness and pain creep into your mind, remind yourself of God's protection and how He is fighting for you. We often think of God being silent these days, but God is speaking to us through His Word and His Spirit living within us. We are never left alone or without protection.
“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” - Psalm 34:7
Psalm 34 is a third Psalm that reminds us that God is our protector. The angel of the Lord encamps around those of us who believe in Him, and He keeps us safe. It can be not easy at times to believe this when things are going badly; however, we need to remind ourselves of Psalm 34 when these things happen. The angel of the Lord was the pre-incarnate Christ, and He protected people even before He took on human flesh in the New Testament. Just as He protected people then, He continues to protect us today.
Anytime you feel fear rising in your heart, turn to Psalm 34:7. Remind yourself that the Lord is covering you with His embrace and He is protecting you. Whatever you are facing today, know that God is your protector. Walking onto the missionary field or simply walking through a shady area of town to visit a friend are all ways to feel God's protection in your life. Come easy days or hard days, God remains our protector, which is not something He takes lightly. He protects you every day just as He has protected you every day in the past.
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” - Psalm 91:1-2
This fourth Psalm reminds us that God is our protector in the sense that God is our refuge and fortress. We can trust in Him by knowing that God is our refuge and fortress. All relationships must be built upon trust, which rings true with our relationship with God. We can trust Him, and since we can trust Him, we know He is our true protector who will keep us safe. God is our fortress, which means we can always run to Him. He never turns us away or gives a deaf ear to our cry. Listening to every concern and fear, God fills us up with hope, compassion, and love. He doesn't want us to be afraid because our protection comes from Him. Throughout your day, remind yourself that God is your refuge and fortress. You can run to Him, and He will always keep you protected.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” - Psalm 27:1
A fifth and final Psalm that reminds us God, is our protector is Psalm 27:1. Psalm 27 is one of my favorite Psalms, and similar to the other Psalms listed above, it helps us to remember that God is our protector and there is nothing for us to fear. God is the light of our lives and our salvation. What is there to fear if we know God is for us? There is no reason to be fearful because God is our stronghold. He is the most powerful being of all existence. If we know He is the One responsible for our protection, then there is nothing to fear. He created the world and everything in it, including you and me. If God can do all this, then why should we doubt His protection? We can always count on God because He will never let us down and will stand by our side through everything that happens in our life.
Since God is our protector, there is nothing to fear. God loves us, and He only wants the best for us. Many scary things will happen in our life, but we can rest in the promise that God is our protector. Whoever you are fearful of or are in doubt, turn to this Psalm and allow its words to fill your heart with safety. God is our protector and will stay our protector forever.
