Prayer for Pain, When God Won’t Remove Your Thorns

When we are in any kind of pain, we need prayer. A prayer for pain. We pray and open the door to conversation with God.

Pain. We’ve all experienced one kind or another. Some of us are going through pain at this very moment. Physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual pain that causes us to question the reason. When we are in any kind of pain, we need prayer. A prayer for pain. We pray and open the door to conversation with God. Our prayers may be spoken out loud, thought, whispered, or written. However, we choose to share our concerns with God, we can rest assured He recognizes every thought and word. Going to God in prayer allows us to draw closer to Him. When we pray, we are trusting God and recognizing His will. Whether we have a new relationship with God or we have been walking with Him for a long time, He is always available and ready to answer in His way and in His timing. We can find comfort and peace through sharing time with the Lord.

Comforting Prayer for Pain

Father, thank You for this opportunity to come to You in prayer. Thank You for the love and forgiveness You give. I am asking for relief from this pain I am carrying. My pain is deep and unrelenting. Father, You know my hurts. You know my heart. Please guide me to remember to go to You at all times. In joys and in sorrows, You are with me. I don’t understand the reason for this pain. Yet, I trust in You and the plan You have for my life. Your mercies are new each morning. I thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and mercy. Please heal me from this pain, according to Your plan and in Your timing. Thank You, Father, Amen.

What Does the Bible Say about Pain?

Scripture shares about people who endured all kinds of pain. From the pain of childbirth, the pain of illnesses, pain involving family disputes, the pain of loss of loved ones, the pain of worry, to the pain of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, pain is not new.

Many times in the Bible, we read where people cry out for help. Some cry out to the Lord. Others who did not know Him cried out to pagan gods.

As Christians, we have the ability to go to God and ask for His help. We learn from Scripture that pain will come into our lives. Different kinds of pain. However, we can find comfort from God (Psalm 34:18). The Lord knows our hearts. He feels every emotion and ounce of pain that we experience. He is with us when we suffer. He is with us when we rejoice.

Healing from pain may happen in this life. The healing from pain may happen when we reach Heaven. God knows His plan for us, and we can find comfort in knowing His love and mercy.

The Bible also shares that God will wipe away every tear and death shall be no more (Revelation 21:4). Can you imagine a world with no tears, no fear, no pain? What a glorious day that will be when we get to walk side by side with God.

Why Does God Allow Us to Experience Pain?

We often hear the questions “Why did God allow this to happen? Why did God let us have this pain?” Scripture shares how we are not to be surprised by the sufferings and pain we endure. Each painful moment and situation offers an opportunity to learn and to share the love of God with others. Though we would prefer not to suffer any pain and for life to be filled with only joys every day, we are able to experience pain and to help others with our journey through pain.

When I was told of the diagnosis of breast cancer in 2005, I immediately fell to my knees. Tears flowed as I sat with my husband and asked the questions “Why me?” and “What now?” The diagnosis was a shock because my routine mammogram had always been normal, and I thought there were no medical problems. After diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and years of medicines to hopefully prevent the cancer from returning, I began to see the numerous lessons God was teaching me, my husband, and my family.

As I returned to good health, my husband Alan and I looked for ways to help others going through the cancer journey. We soon realized that God had allowed us to experience the cancer journey so we could help others.

In sharing with other newly diagnosed and long-time diagnosed cancer patients, we also leaned closer to God. Our strong faith was made stronger through my cancer.

Starting a cancer support group at church and being available to anyone who needed to chat about their own cancer journey were two ways we shared the love of God and helped others. We listened when someone needed to talk. We hugged and held those people who needed to cry. Most importantly, we prayed.

My cancer was a physical pain. Yet, within that physical pain, there was emotional pain, too. I didn’t want the cancer journey. God had reasons for allowing me to experience the physical and emotional pain. I’m thankful I was able to help others by sharing my walk with cancer and by sharing how God never left my side.

We may never know the full reasons God allows us to experience pain. God has a plan, and we can find comfort knowing He will never leave us.

What Does the Bible Say about Healing?

Not every person is healed from their emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual pain. Prayers may go unanswered or not answered in the way we hoped. Relationships with family or friends can continue to struggle, even after we have prayed. Physical pain may last forever instead of leaving the body. Spiritual pain may cause more heartache as questions are raised and answers are sought. Mental pain may stay with us even while medicines are helping. Emotional pain may cause more tears than we ever wanted.

The Bible does not tell us that every prayer for healing will be answered in the way we desire. God gives certain people, like medical professionals, unique gifts to help with the pain. These people do not heal. Healing comes from God.

Jesus healed many people (Matthew 4:23). The Bible shares how elders of the church were called to pray over sick people and anoint them with oil (James 5:14-15). Today, we may gather in groups to pray for healing, or we may pray alone. Either way, God hears our prayers.

Christians know healing comes from God, not from people. Praying for one another can bring comfort to those praying and to those being prayed for. God gives wisdom and discernment to some people so they may help with His plan. Other times, the healing will be found in Heaven, not on this earth.

In the Bible, we learn of a woman with a bleeding issue. Her faith was strong. She believed that if she could touch the hem of the garment of Jesus, she would be healed. Jesus was on the way to see another person. Yet, Jesus felt when the woman had touched His garment. The woman was healed.

Our faith may be strong, yet our prayers may go unanswered. God knows what is best for us. We can be calmed and comforted knowing He loves us, and complete healing will come at the time He has appointed.

The Bible tells us to lean on God, not on our own understanding.
