5 Prayers of Intercession for Your Spouse's Health

Meg Bucher

“…I am the LORD, who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26)

Prayer is powerful. When we pray to God on our spouse’s behalf, we acknowledge His sovereignty. Our Creator is in control. He allows suffering, but is not the author of it. God sympathizes with our pain. The author of Hebrews reminds us, “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

Marriage allows two people to accomplish more for Christ than we could alone. We can have full confidence God hears us, and is close when we are brokenhearted. His plan for our lives is good, despite the rampant pain and heartache in our world. We can trust and pray for His will for our lives. Because, despite the depravity in the world, His plans are more than we can ask for or imagine. Let us lift all of our worries up to Him, and ask for increased faith and trust in our God. 1. A Prayer for our Spouse’s Physical Health

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)

Father,

Author of life, You knit each of us in our mother’s womb. You compassionately care for each of us. Today we thank You for Your healing hand on our lives. You are the God of miracles, and are capable of miraculous healing in our lives! Let us not be afraid to come to You with our ailments, and the ailments of those we love!

When we are in physical pain, our perspective comes under attack. It’s hard to focus, sometimes hard to breathe when we are physically ill or in physical pain. Our senses are agitated and we are aware of everything malfunctioning in our physical bodies. We pray for the protection of our spouse’s physical health today, Father. Heal and sustain our spouses, relieve them of any pain they are suffering from and repair their wounds. Shield them from invisible viruses and rearrange their circumstances to avoid harmful accidents.

We lift the worry of our spouses’ physical health up to You, Father. Increase our trust in You, and remind us when we are tempted to worry and panic, of Your love for them, and your care for our anxious hearts.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

2. A Prayer for Our Spouse’s Spiritual Health

“LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.” (Isaiah 33:2)

Father,

We praise You for Jesus. Thank You for His sacrifice on the cross to free us from the chains of our sins. Because of Your great love for us, the Holy Spirit now dwells in all who believe in, accept, and follow Christ. Help us remember to turn to you when anxiety wells up inside of our flesh, Father. Our allegiance is to You, not our anxieties. Help us to focus and react in prayer and the search of Your Truth for comfort.

May our spouses have rich, inner spiritual lives, as they follow You, Jesus. We pray their hearts are continually softened to the Spirit, and their ears are tuned to Your Truth. Let them know who they are, and Whose they are. We pray today for their confidence to be rooted in Christ, and for prayer to be an ongoing daily conversation.

Spirit, allow our spouses to discern and understand the wisdom in Scripture, and the plan You have for their lives. Guide them, step by step, and protect them from the attacks of the enemy. May they always and everyday, seek You first in all they do, and experience the joy of serving Your Kingdom, here on earth and for eternity.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

3. A Prayer for our Spouse’s Mental Health

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

Father,

Praise and glory to You, Creator and Author of life. The more we learn about our mental health, the more we are in awe of the complicated fabric of each human mind. From high sensitivity to attention deficits, we are reminded of how much we need You. We see how You take what we perceive as weaknesses and turn them into strengths and channels of love. You truly work all things for good, even the challenging and hard realities of life. Nothing shocks or surprises You, Father.

We pray, Father, for the mental health of our spouses. May they unashamedly seek help and counseling when they feel overwhelmed or off. Bless the ears that hear their story, and are gifted to heal their mental health. This life will not be easy, but You have placed people around us in droves to love us. Thank You, Father, for caring so deeply and specifically for us. Bless and heal our spouse’s mental health when they are suffering and in pain. Teach us how to be supportive, encouraging sources of hope for them when they need it the most.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

4. A Prayer for a Healthy Marriage

“Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” (Psalms 107:19-21)

Father,

We pray for a healthy marriage. You provide for and sustain us, and have set us a part to accomplish more for Your Kingdom than we could a part. We pray for healthy communication and a strong sense of who and Whose we are at all times. May we each run to Jesus individually, and together. Help us to pray together, study the truth of Your Word together, and choose to forgive each other for offenses. Help us not to be easily offended, Father! May we show the grace and mercy You show us to our spouses.

Life is not easy, and our enemy’s goal is to tear us a part …to steal, kill, and destroy. Help us to be aware and to put on the full armor of God when we walk out into the world each day. Heal the hurts we inflict upon each other, as imperfect sinners in this world. Bless us with an appreciation for each other, and help us to see our spouses as You see them, Father. Thank You for blessing us with someone to walk through life with.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

5. A Prayer for God’s Will in our Spouse’s Life

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

Father,

We pray for our spouses’ physical, mental, and spiritual health. Shield and protect them, heal and comfort them, remind them of the hope they find in You when they are ill or in pain. There are many things in life we do not, and will not, understand. But no-one or nothing can change the number of our days on this earth that You have assigned us. You know every day. Let us take comfort in Your sovereignty, Father.

Bless our spouses to live out Your will for them fully, no matter what the world and the curse of sin throw at them. Help us to be supportive and encouraging, to listen and love them as they follow Your call on their lives. Bless our spouses, Father. Keep them physically safe, and healthy. We pray Your favor on their lives. Guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, today and always. Reveal Your truth. Protect our spouses from invisible viruses and spiritual attacks. There is a time for everything, Father. Your perfect timing.

We trust You with the life of our spouse.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
