What Is True Faith?
The Bible declares that:
1.“Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders declared a good report” (Hebrews 11:1-2).
2. “We know that without faith it is impossible to please God for He that comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
3. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).
4. “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17) (Galatians 3:11) (Hebrews 10:38).
Listed throughout the Bible are the hallmarks of faith. All the mighty men and women of God believed God and had faith that He is a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him. To not have faith is considered a sin. The Bible declares,
5. Jesus said unto him, “If thou canst believe all things are made possible to them that believe” (Mark 9:23).
If you are a Christian, you received salvation by faith. You have faith that Jesus Christ walked this earth as a human for 33 years, was crucified, died on the cross, and rose three days later. All of this, we believe by faith. By faith, we believe that when our assignment on this earth is finished, we will receive the reward of our suffering and dwell in Heaven for all eternity. We receive this promise by faith.
The Bible says
6. “And he believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6).
This is a reference to Abraham. When we have faith and believe in God, it is counted unto us for righteousness. It is safe to assume that faith is the beginning and end of all that we seek and all that we hope to have.
How Do We Get Faith in Hard Times?
7. “Seek the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).
When I need faith, I go to the Bible. I turn to the concordance and read every scripture that deals with faith. I learned how to do this by watching Creflo Dollar. There was a time in my life where I felt that I had nothing but my faith. I was in my 30s and had recently accepted the call to teach. My contract as a television news anchor/reporter had ended. By faith, I went to the Board of Education and started substitute teaching. I taught for several months. I received a teaching contract later that year.
You must be certified to teach, and I was not. A year later, I told God that I know He did not call me to teach and just have a substitute teacher’s salary. I said if you want me to teach, I need to get in a program. God opened the door to a program called “Pathways to Teaching.” They paid for me to get certified to teach through a cohort program. At the time, it was through Crichton College. That was a local Christian college in Memphis at the time. They treated us well. They provided lunch and dinner in the summertime. They bought all our books. Our internship was a full-time teaching job. As we worked on our course work the following fall and spring, we were provided dinner and our books were paid for. Is there anything too hard for God?
Who Were People in the Bible Who Exercised Great Faith?
There are many people in the Bible who exercised great faith. We can start out with Abraham. He believed in God and it was counted unto Him for righteousness. Abraham had faith that God would provide a lamb even when instructed to complete a hard task (Genesis 22). I can think of no harder task than having to sacrifice a child. When his son Isaac questioned where they were going, Abraham told him. When his son questioned where the lamb for a burnt offering was, Abraham replied that “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:7).
Abraham was about to sacrifice his son when God spoke to him to stay his hand. God provided a ram for the offering.
Moses had faith to lead the people of Israel into the promised land and out of bondage (Exodus 3-15). God delivered the people of Israel every step of the way. He delivered them from Pharaoh after 400 years of bondage. He parted the Red Sea to secure their escape from Pharaoh. He provided manna from Heaven to feed them. Even though Moses did not make it to the promised land, a good number of those from Israel did. Even after the people went after idol gods, God was still faithful.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers because of their jealousy (Genesis 37). The Bible declares that Jacob loved his son Joseph more than the others. Joseph was the son of his old age. He also made Joseph a coat of many colors. God never left Joseph. Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Midianites merchantmen. Potiphar purchased Joseph from the Midianites. Even when Joseph was imprisoned because of a lie from Potiphar’s wife, God was still faithful. Joseph continued to be faithful and continued to cling to God. A normal man would have given up on God, but not Joseph. Eventually, Joseph came out of prison. He found favor with Pharaoh because he could interpret dreams (Genesis 41). He was eventually reunited with his brothers because they came seeking food in Egypt. He was reunited with his father and especially his younger brother Benjamin. With all that Joseph had suffered, he had every right to be bitter. Joseph was good, kind, and realized that what happened to him was for a reason. God had sent him this route so that his family would not die of famine (Genesis 43-47).
The woman with the issue of blood exercised great faith (Matthew 9:20-22). She pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of his garment.
8. “For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole” (Matthew 9:21).
9. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, He said, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.” And the woman was made whole from that hour (Matthew 9:22).
This woman had been to many doctors and spent all her money (Matthew 5:26). She was not getting better by the visits but getting worse. How many times have you had an issue and went to God in prayer to become whole? How many times have women with pressing issues for their families had to lay out before the Lord and declare, “If I can just touch the hem of His garment, I shall be made whole.”

There are many scriptures in the Bible that deal with faith. When you need a miracle, meditate on the scriptures, and pull down your measure of faith. You can even ask God to increase your faith. During this season of need, fast as well.
13. The Bible declares that this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21).
A one-day fast might be okay. I have found out sometimes, you need a three-day fast. If a one-day fast is simple for you, a three-day fast can really move a situation. Remember to pray during this time and read the scriptures. Before getting the call to teach, I was instructed to not watch television, do not talk on the phone, and to just pray and God will speak. God did speak. I realize a lot of times for calls to ministry and teaching you need leadership guidance.
14. However, you can go to God on your own to obtain grace and mercy in a time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
