From June 2023 through April 2024, I found myself wrestling with a familiar foe: doubt. Nothing seemed to be fine with me; even my own mother turned against me. It felt like the entire kingdom of darkness had risen against my life. Situations in my personal life, seemingly insurmountable, left me feeling utterly alone and questioning everything I believed.
My usual coping mechanisms felt useless. Even prayer almost felt empty, and I was nearly giving up on the power of scripture. The weight of it all felt crushing—a battle I wasn't sure I could win.
But I thank God that today, my confidence in the saving might of Christ is restored. I can confidently say to anyone going through any kind of challenge in life that in your quiet moments of despair, in the struggle, God is still present. So, trust me, I know the feeling and have a perfect understanding of what it truly means for our faith to feel like a battle.
I know that as Christians, we all have faced moments in our lives when our faith feels like a relentless battle, when life throws curveballs, disappointments sting, and the path ahead can seem shrouded in darkness.
The challenges we face in times like this can feel so overwhelming that we question God’s love, His promises, and even His existence. Are you feeling that way right now? Are you feeling utterly drained and struggling to hold on?
You're not alone. This is a common experience for any true believer worldwide; it's a brutal reality we face. If you don’t face these challenges in your life, trust me, you are lost in faith. I have realized that the devil doesn’t waste his time attacking anyone who is not against him and his kingdom’s agenda.

Understanding the Battlefield of Faith
The initial step to victory in any fight is grasping the landscape. Similarly, as Christians, we understand that our spiritual conflicts aren't waged with blades and armor but with the tools of supplication, belief, and God's teachings. (Ephesians 6:10-18).
We must also understand today that our enemy doesn’t play fair at all. Even the scripture, 1 Peter 5:8, describes the enemy as seeking to steal, kill, and destroy our faith. And sadly, he would go to any length to achieve these wicked goals.
The devil often uses subtle tactics such as doubt, fear, worry, discouragement, and temptation to bring you down. He is a master deceiver who endlessly whispers lies designed to erode our trust in God and separate us from His love. He even uses circumstances and relationships to try to prove to us that God isn't there.
In my personal experience, I realize that one of the most common battlegrounds for us Christians is our minds. Therefore, doubt, like a persistent weed planted by the devil, can easily take root and choke out the healthy growth of faith in us if we don’t take care.
Other powerful weapons the devil uses against our minds are negative thoughts, anxieties, and fears. He creates circumstances in our lives that will make us battle with self-doubt, questioning our worthiness and our ability to overcome challenges. It's during these crazy times that we may find ourselves questioning God's goodness, His power, and His plan for our lives.
We must understand that these battles are often spiritual rather than purely situational, and we need to recognize the spiritual warfare we are in because everything we face or deal with in the physical realm is a manifestation of things designed and concluded upon in the spirit realm, and our enemy fights for our souls.
Therefore, recognizing these attacks for what they are—spiritual warfare—is crucial to standing firm. This fight is not about you being weak or failing, but about the enemy actively seeking to hinder your relationship with God. This knowledge empowers us to fight back, not with our own strength but with the strength of the Holy Spirit.
Strategies for Standing Firm When Faith Feels Like a Battle
1. Prayer: Your Lifeline in the Storm
Prayer isn't a quick fix for difficulties. It's a vital link to God, a sacred bond with the wellspring of all power and solace.
When your belief feels challenged, dedicated prayer should be your main defense. It shouldn't be merely requesting God to resolve our issues, but an act of fully expressing our feelings to Him, revealing our uncertainties, worries, and anxieties. Your prayer should be an act of submission before Him, seeking His direction, might, and knowledge.
During trouble or spiritual assault, regular prayer aids us in creating a closer bond with God, thus providing us with solace, strength, and a renewed sense of aim.
Remember Jesus' words in Matthew 7:7, "Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." Steady prayer is a strong weapon against the enemy. It helps us refocus on God instead of our problems. Prayer is the protection, the defense, and the weapon in our spiritual fight.
2. Scripture: Your Sword and Shield
The Bible is God's active message, a wellspring of truth, direction, and solace. Therefore, when your belief feels challenged, studying the Bible is like getting a sword and shield.
God's message strengthens and prepares us to fight against the falsehoods and uncertainties planted by the adversary. It also recalls God's loyalty, His pledges, and His constant affection.
During hard times, read Bible passages that address your present difficulties. When uncertainty overwhelms you, read verses promising God's dependability and might. Reflect on passages confirming God's love and closeness. Learn by heart verses offering support and optimism, so you can quickly recall these truths during spiritual battles.
The Bible assures us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." God's Word is a strong weapon to aid us in the faithful struggle.
3. Community: Your Support System
We shouldn't travel this faith path by ourselves. A strong Christian group is vital, particularly when facing spiritual challenges. These are people you can confide in; they're your reliable companions and spiritual backup. Let them pray for you and give you hope.
Hebrews 10:24–25 urges us to think of each other, inspiring love and good deeds: “Let us think of one another to spur love and good works. Let's not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let's encourage each other—and all the more as you see the day approaching.” A solid faith group helps us remain steadfast in our belief.
Through shared events and shared help, we can overcome spiritual fights with fresh strength and determination. Find a church family, a small group, or close Christian pals who will pray for you, offer helpful advice, and remind you of God's love when you feel isolated.
4. Self-Care: Nourishing Your Soul
From personal experience, spiritual struggles can deplete your emotional, physical, and mental strength. Ignoring your health makes you more susceptible to uncertainty and hopelessness. So, it's crucial to make physical and emotional wellness a priority during these periods.
Get sufficient sleep, eat wholesome food, work out regularly, and do things that bring you happiness and calm. This isn't self-centered; it's vital for winning the spiritual fight.
Care for your body and mind to more effectively handle the spiritual conflicts you face. Taking care of yourself can boost your emotional control, strengthen your ability to cope with pressure, and sharpen your thinking.
Remember, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7). Caring for our minds and bodies with healthy routines will better prepare us to withstand the lures and diversions of the adversary.
5. Remember God's Promises: Anchoring Your Hope
When belief feels like a fight, it's easy to forget God's pledges. Yet, it's crucial to keep them foremost in our thoughts. Think deeply on scriptures that discuss God's loyalty, support, and constant affection. Recall past triumphs—times when God showed Himself true. These recollections become anchors for your optimism during difficult periods.
God's pledges are firm, lasting truths offering hope even in the hardest situations. (Hebrews 6:18-20) Considering times God has been faithful before will boost your determination and restore your confidence in His nature.
Holding God's pledges close will aid you in resisting uncertainty and negative ideas. The adversary desires us to concentrate on our battles and conditions. But by deciding to focus on God’s pledges instead, we change our viewpoint and remind ourselves of God’s steady love and loyalty.
Relying on God's steadfast pledges is essential to remaining strong against uncertainty and hardship.
Emerging Victorious: The Promise of Perseverance
Staying strong in belief during a fight isn't about dodging trouble but meeting it directly with God's power. It's about picking faith over fright, hope over hopelessness, and reliance over uncertainty. It's a journey of development, improvement, and strengthening our bond with God.
James 1:2-4 says, “My friends, think it all good when you face various tests. Understanding this, that testing your belief creates endurance. But let endurance finish its work, so you may be complete and whole, lacking nothing.”
These tests aren't meant to crush us; they're meant to improve us, strengthen our nature, and bring us closer to God.
Accept the fight, knowing that the win is our Lord's. Accept the difficulties, knowing that your God is greater and mightier than anything you're facing. Move forward with assurance, knowing that your belief isn't just a feeling but an unshakeable connection with your heavenly Father.
You are not alone; His grace is sufficient. The battles you face might feel overwhelming, but they never define you. Your strength is found in Christ, and your victory is assured through Him.
