TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT
Gossip is the enemy hiding in plain sight. We may think saying things about another person is harmless, but God knew what he was talking about when he lumped gossip with murder (Proverbs 6:16-19). A lying tongue is one of the seven things God detests. Gossip is a casual or unconstrained conversation or report about other people, typically involving details not confirmed as true. Whether you are the victim or perpetrator, gossip causes anger.
We often think of gossip as something said in confidence and then shared with others who are unaware and unconcerned about the initial information. When we dig deeper, we see that gossip is reckless, irresponsible communication, with no regard for the feelings of those affected.
The next time someone wishes to share something with you that you know is not in line with Godly communication, ask the busybody "Why are you telling me this?” Refuse to be a party to participate in gossip. Let's determine to be truthful and honest in our conversation for the benefit of ourselves and others.
PRAY
Dear Lord, for those of us who struggle with gossip, change our hearts. Help us to guard our hearts so that our words can be edifying to those that hear us. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray, Amen.
REFLECT
Gossip is not pleasing to God. What can you do to change your habit of gossiping?
