Watch and Pray – Beloved Women – October 7, 2020

READ: “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41 ESV)

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Temptations are battles that we all must face. We never know when we may find ourselves in situations that may cause us to act impulsively and make poor decisions.  When our guard is down, that is when we become most vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes and become targets for temptation.

Prior to being betrayed and arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus stepped away to pray.  He took three of His disciples with Him and asked them to keep watch with Him.  After stepping away to pray alone, Jesus returned to find them sleeping instead of watching. He responded by commanding them to “watch and pray that they may not enter into temptation.”

Jesus’ command still holds true for us today. Our best intentions are not enough. We may intend to do right, but decide to do wrong. We have to be vigilant and on guard for traps that may be laid before us. In our own power, we cannot fight temptations, but in God’s power, we have victory over them all.

PRAY: Father, teach me how to watch and pray that I may not enter into temptation.  In my own power, I am weak, but I know that in You, I am strong. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray, Amen.

REFLECT: Are you on guard against temptation or have you let your guard down?
