Today’s Treasure

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

Dear Friends,

In last Sunday’s introduction to Treasures Along the Way, I shared these words from a podcast by Susan Hunt and Karen Hodge: https://encourage.pcacdm.org/?s=susan+hunt+and+karen+hodge

“A life-giving leader sees how all parts of life and ministry fit together and is increasingly passionate about the small moments and tasks because she has a vision of the whole.   The Westminster Confession tells us that `the Scriptures manifest themselves to be the Word of God, by their majesty and purity; by the consent of all the parts, and the scope of the whole, which is to give all glory to God.’   When we see every moment of life as one part of the whole of life and that the purpose of our lives is to glorify God, then it helps us see Scripture, to see life and to see ministry, not as segments, not as individual components but as consenting parts which all together will somehow tell the gospel story.  When we get that clarity of Scripture, life, and ministry, the wonderful thing that happens is that the mundane becomes majestic.”

Think of it - mundane moments take on majestic meaning. Sometimes, maybe a lot of times, we don’t see the majestic in the mundane because we don’t see “every moment of life as one part of the whole of life and that the purpose of our lives is to glorify God.” We also may be so fixated on what we don’t have and what we want, that what we do have goes unnoticed. Once our hearts are open to seeing mundane moments as opportunities for God to do something majestic, “it helps us see Scripture, to see life and to see ministry not as segments, not as individual components but as consenting parts which all together will somehow tell the gospel story.”

As in last week, the devotionals in this Daily Treasure series, Treasures Along the Way focus on those little moments in life that somehow help tell the gospel story. Though little to others, each one is a monument designed to remind me of God’s faithfulness,  transforming mundane, seemingly insignificant moments into the majestic as He drew me into His heart, inviting me to taste and see that He is good. Recognizing how all the little moments are part of the bigger story, encourages me to be intentional about setting the table for those I love and invite them to taste and see the Lord is good.

How can diaper-changing, pushing a child on a swing, meeting a friend for coffee, baking cookies with a grandchild, and surprising your children with ice cream on the way home from school just because, finding grace when you speak too quickly or in anger, cleaning the church kitchen, decluttering for a friend overwhelmed by life, preparing a meal and sharing it with a widow who dreads eating alone every night  - how can these moments be a part of the majestic whole of our lives designed to glorify God? Seeing each moment as another tiny stitch in the tapestry of the gospel story helps us trust the Lord with the most mundane of tasks, confident that though we sometimes can’t see His work, He is keeping His promise to make all things work together for good for those who are His children.

Treasured by Him,

Sharon
