THE FREEDOM OF CASTING MY BURDERNS
Christine Wyrtzen
Cast your burdens upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee. Psalm 55:22
These are days filled with anxiety. The world feels as fragile as an eggshell. I can see the reckless and godless decision-making happening globally. As a child of God who knows I can carry everything and everyone to Jesus in prayer, why don't I do it more?
Some burdens are heavier than others but, sometimes, the weight of a single one can threaten to drown me. When I carry it for a day, it’s not that heavy but when I attempt to carry it over many months, even years, my spiritual muscles give out.
Other times, it's the accumulation of them that weighs me down. Peter described Satan as a roaring lion who prowls to devour but the context of his stalking is that he seeks for someone who is already suffering. They are worn down, struggling with God, and are easy prey. Insinuations are made that my trust in God is misplaced.
My Christ promises to sustain me as I gather all my burdens and empty my heart of its weight. The promise to sustain does not mean that I will not be shaken nor momentarily stagger. It means that I will not fall into a place where there is no hope if I stick close to Jesus and continue to cast my burdens upon Him. I know I don't need to assume responsibility for them and drag the weight of them behind me. I know that I shouldn't be so proud as to believe that I can fix them.
What is it that threatens you today? Loss of your home, your retirement, your child's faith, your spouse's mental stability, your marriage, your family's future in a world that has grown hostile to Christ and His followers? Take each one in prayer, picture lifting it up your hands and casting it into the lap of your Christ. He bore all our sorrows. No longer do we need to groan under the heavy burdens of life and believe no one will listen, help, or deliver. When our heart would fracture and crack into a thousand pieces because of the stresses upon us, God's hands will hold it together as we loosen our own grip and let Him have it.
Prince of Peace, reign over my heart. You never worried and with You inside, I can live Your life. You are my rock for yet another day. Amen
