WHY DIDN’T HE STOP HER?
By: Christine Wyrtzen
She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6b
The woman allowed the serpent to engage her. The topic and the way he presented it was so beguiling that she let down her defenses. Adam was there with her. Was he listening? Was he alert? If he was distracted, then wouldn’t he have been shocked when he saw that she had eaten of the tree? When she offered him some, wouldn’t he have felt alarm by her disobedience to their God?
This lack of male leadership plagues our churches and families. I am not a man-hater. I don’t have an axe to grind. I’ve been happily married to Ron for forty years, a man who loves and follows God. However, I’m a good listener of the many women who tell me their stories. I’m an observer of who it is that makes up the laborers of the church. The percentages of men versus women reveal a one to three ratio, at least.
Most of the women I talk to are crying out to God for the spiritual lives of their husbands. They dream of having a man of God in their home to love and protect them, to lead and serve their families.
Are there men who hug their wives and children and pray for them before he leaves the house? Yes. Are there men who ask God for the spiritual intuition to know how to read the hearts of each family member? Yes. Are there men who are spiritually street-smart about the enemy and how he will prey on the weaknesses of each person in his household? Yes. Are there men who pray strategic prayers for their family’s safety? Yes.
They are the minority, but they exist. For many who read this today, know that they will sink in their chairs reading this. Who they are married to is so far from who Jesus would be if He were their husband. While there may be grieving, there should not be hopeless despair. The power of God to change a man, any man, has not diminished.
What if you are a single mother raising your family by yourself? What then? I have good news for you. You have a Husband who offers all the things you long for. He is protecting, praying, and leading. He’s made hundreds of vows in the promises of scripture and He will not break one. Ask Him to help you experience Him in a deeper way so that you are intimate with the Husband you seek!
The absence of leadership in the garden contributed to the fall of mankind. The woman ate, yes, and she bore the consequences. Adam neglected to lead, then he ate, and bore the consequences. Men and women have struggled with the breach of trust ever since. Perpetual confusion and tension continues to plague any home that does not follow God’s law.
Show us how to pray for our men! And for every one who listens to You and leads, we thank you for the rare gift they give us. Amen.
