The Always Coming God

“I [Jesus] will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:18 ESV
God is always coming to have a relationship with His creation.
He was present as Creator in the beginning. He hovered over the deep. He spoke the Word and it was. (Genesis 1:1-4)
God walked in the garden with Adam and Eve. (Genesis 3:8)
He was with Noah on the ark. (Genesis 6:9)
He led His people out of slavery. (Exodus 19:4)
God walked the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. (Daniel 3)
He stood in a lions’ den with Daniel. (Daniel 6)
He came in the flesh as Jesus. (John 1)
He died that we may live. (Romans 6:8-10)
And He hasn’t stopped coming. His coming to live in all who believe.
The God who walked in the garden, freed slaves, conquered a giant, defeated an army of about 125,000 with a troop of 300 – He is still coming today.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26
The God who created this beautiful world, knit us together in our mother’s wombs, who knows our thoughts, and conquered sin and death – He is coming to live in those of us who believe that Jesus paid it all.
He hasn’t left us as orphans, or abandoned us without direction. No. He lives in us to give us wisdom, to grow in us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and even self-control. God is coming to give us all we need for life and godliness. He is coming.
Instead, this amazing, loving,’ always coming’ God comes to me just as I am – broken, stumbling, sinful.
This ‘always coming’ God frees us from slavery and sin. It isn’t my good deeds that draws God close. It is God’s character, His love. It isn’t my continued effort to do right that makes God love me more, He couldn’t love me more than He does now. No, now I get to do good things. I get to obey God so that I can show Him love and gratitude for who He is and what He does for me.
For if I love Jesus, I will obey His commands. And what amazes me more is that God’s Spirit living in me helps me obey. This ‘always coming’ God who loves me and comes for me, He gives me power to show Him love.
And He is always coming for you too.
Today, slow down and thank God for always coming and remember it is our greatest joy to show love for Him by obeying Him.
Father God, Thank You for not abandoning us as orphans. Thank You for coming to have a relationship with us and living in us who believe in the work Jesus did on the cross. May Your Spirit living in us empower us to love You well by obeying Your commands. May our lives be lived in humble gratitude for who You are and what You do for us…in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
