God Chooses to Forget
By Carolyn Dale Newell
I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins. Isaiah 43:25 NKJV
Are you ever plagued with guilt from flashbacks of your life before salvation? Perhaps recent failures have left you crying out like David for the joy of your salvation to be restored (Psalm 51:12).
Guilt can be beneficial when it makes us aware of our need for a Savior, but it is often the weapon of Satan used to plant doubt in a Christian. “You are not good enough.” “Who do you think you are, serving God?” “You’ll never make it. You keep messing up.” Sound familiar?
While Satan’s memory of our sin is as clear as crystal, God has forgotten all of it. It is not the same as when we go shopping and forget to purchase bread. God has perfect memory, but He chooses to forget. He no longer brings our sins to mind.
Picture a court room, and you are on trial. “Guilty” is your plea, but then Jesus Christ approaches the bench. He has paid the penalty for your sin, and as the gavel strikes, the judge bellows, “Not guilty.”
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1 NKJV
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 NKJV
Child of God, do you realize that the east and west never meet? No matter where you travel, the east and west are always as far apart as possible, a never ending circle. There’s a North Pole and a South Pole, but He didn’t say north and south. You will never arrive at East or West, and that’s how far removed your sins are.
We serve a merciful, forgiving God who loves us. He has forgiven, and He has forgotten.
Allow guilt to bring praise to your lips for God’s great mercy and forgiveness, but don’t let Satan taunt you with it. There may be well-meaning people without a good knowledge of Scripture who may tell you that you’ve committed the unforgivable sin. This guilt has even brought some Christians to the point of suicide. Tell them that God has made the decision to forget every sin. Remind yourself daily that God no longer remembers.
Precious Father, thank You for forgiving and choosing to forget so much. Help me live a life pleasing to You. Protect me from Satan’s darts. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
