Today’s Special is: My Husband’s Battle with Leukemia
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Carolyn Dale Newell
Main Ingredient:
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
– Romans 8:28 NKJV
Entrée:
A diagnosis of any kind of cancer is a devastating blow to anyone. It knocks you off your feet. We listened to the doctor as he told us that the leukemia had progressed, and the only treatment was a stem cell transplant with less than a perfect match. That was Valentine’s Day 2000, and we certainly did not feel like celebrating. We went home to think and pray.
Timmy was not at peace about the transplant, and I was scared of losing my husband. He had been given 12-18 months to live without the transplant, and it seemed like we had hit a brick wall with no way to escape. How was God going to work this out for good?
Miracles began to happen. It began with a phone call about a TV news story which led us to a clinical trial at Johns Hopkins. A new experimental drug was putting people with Timmy’s type of leukemia into remission. They only accepted a select number of people for the trial. Timmy was the last one to be accepted. The next miracle came when his blood counts remained stable while he was off medication for a short period prior to starting the experimental drug.
Finally, the news we waited for came. He was in remission. As I write this, it is almost Valentines Day 2014, and we always have a reason to celebrate each year. God worked it all together for good. The brick wall that we had run into was not the end. God was directing us in another direction.
Not everyone gets a miracle, but God is still the Great Physician who miraculously cures. He is also the God of comfort, grace, and mercy. It is in the darkest times of our lives that we see the deep love of God.
Take Out:
Never doubt that God still does miracles. Keep in mind that brick walls are not always there to stop you. Sometimes God is redirecting you.
Dessert:
Dear Lord, Thank You for the trials which help us experience the depths of Your love. We lift up the sick to You asking for Your healing. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
