If I Were a Fuzzy Wuzzy Bear
 By Olivia Barnes

By the grace of God I am what I am. 1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. 1 John 3:1 ESV

Do you know the butterfly song?

I love it; it is such a fun song. I was singing it with my son and I was singing my favorite verse:

‘And if I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear, I’d thank you Lord for my fuzzy wuzzy hair,

but I just thank you Father for making me me.’

And I thought have I ever thanked God for making me, me? My desire is to instill in my little boy’s heart that he was created by God, that God loves him and that because of this he is special, that he should thank God for who he is and not get caught up with trying to change himself.

It made me feel like such a hypocrite. There I am singing this song and before I go to bed I will wash off the makeup and stand on the scale to see how the new diet is going!

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe there is anything wrong with wearing makeup or dieting and staying fit and healthy. The problem is that often these types of activities can be accompanied by self loathing, belittling ourselves, thinking we are worthless, until we get to the point where life is drifting rather than moving forward with purpose and drive, running the race that has been set before us. And this is not right.

We need to have God’s perspective on who we are.

God gave His only Son for you. And if you have accepted Christ as your Savior this means that when God looks at you He doesn’t see someone who is worthless or who fails – He sees His Son. He sees someone who is covered in the blood of the Lamb.

In His Word He says you are:

Loved (1 John 3:1); His child (John 1:12); a saint of the true and living God (Ephesians 1:1); His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10); complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10); the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19); a daughter of the King of kings (Galatians 3:26); fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14); valuable (Matthew 10:31); forgiven (Acts 10:43); chosen (Revelation 17:14); called (2 Peter 1:3).

Within the armor of God, the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17) provides protection for the mind. Protection against anything that seeks to confuse, impede or destroy our walk with Christ, such as discouragement or deceit. This includes thoughts of self loathing and worthlessness.

If you are struggling with these types of thoughts, turn to Christ, run to Him in prayer for protection for your mind and your thoughts.

Read Matthew 6:25-34, meditate on it, memorize it and remember that no matter the lies you may think about yourself, when God sees you He sees someone who is of worth, covered by the precious blood of His only Son.

Thank You Lord that Your love and grace never fail... that I am valued in Your sight, I am a child of the true and living God. There are days when lies fill my mind with self loathing but Lord this is not what You want for me. Lord help me to remember on those days that I am of value to You, protect my mind with the helmet of salvation, I am covered in Your blood and as such I am loved and cherished. Let my mind focus on these things. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
