Life on the Tight Rope

Café Menu for Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Today’s Special is:  Finding the Balance you Need

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Jamy Whitaker

Main Ingredient:

Holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

Philippians 2:16 NAS

Entrée:

Hello, my name is Jamy and I am a multi-tasker.  I’ve been this way as long as I can remember.  I find it difficult, if not impossible, to focus on only one task at a time.

For example, if I’m cooking dinner, I’m also writing a grocery list, unloading/loading the dishwasher, setting the table, checking homework and signing permission slips.  In many instances this is a blessing.  I can accomplish many things in a given period of time.  However, I must let you in on a secret.

It’s exhausting!

Not to mention, nearly impossible to maintain.  The idea is the same as my son who runs track.  He can only sprint for so long before he has to take a break or his time will suffer.  God didn’t design us that way.

No matter who you are – rich/poor, old/young, married/single – one thing levels the playing field: TIME.  We are all given 24 hours in a day, which equates to 168 hours/week.  You can’t add to that number.  Therefore, you and I must decide how we will spend the time we’ve been allotted.

It is easy to fall victim to the societal pressure to have a schedule crammed full from morning to night, but that isn’t what God had in mind.

Mary gives us a prime example,

There is only one thing worth being concerned about.  Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.

Luke 10:42

This is when she chose to sit at Jesus’ feet instead of cooking and cleaning.  Our focus needs to be on God and then everything else will fall into place.

This means that sometimes you are going to have to say “no” to an event or activity to allow for some “white space” or margin in your schedule.  It will enable you to draw closer to God and He will direct your path.

Take Out:

What decisions can you make today so you will be more intentional with the time you have been given?

Dessert:

Dear Lord, thank You for the example given in the Scriptures.  Help me to be more like Mary, clearing my crammed schedule, to spend time focused on You.  In this period of change, I ask that You direct my path.  Help me discern what I need to let go of and what I need to cling to.  In Your Precious Name, Amen.
