Longing for Motherhood
Café Menu for Monday, May 26, 2014
Today’s Special is: Resting in the God Who Sees
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Teske Drake
Main Ingredient:
Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields them all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.
– Deuteronomy 33:12 NIV
Entrée:
Mother’s Day can be the most dreaded of holidays for women who’ve experienced the loss of a child or who long to be mothers, yet remain childless. While I consider it a blessing and joy to have the privilege of raising two healthy children, I also know the pain of loss as I remember my three babies in heaven. This Mother’s Day marks 8 years to the day when my first daughter, Chloe, went to be with Jesus shortly after her birth.
Perhaps you are in a place of loss or longing. The very real grief of infertility, so often suffered in silence, may cause you to question, “What’s to celebrate?” as you think about Mother’s Day. Take heart in knowing that the Lord sees you right where you are. In society, we give honor and praise to mothers on this day devoted to them. In the heavenly realms, El Roi – our God who sees – looks down at you and calls you His beloved.
Consider the story of Abraham and Sarah. Abraham was promised by God that he would be the father of many nations and that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars (Genesis 15). Sarah laughed at the thought, given their old age, and took matters into her own hands by having her maidservant, Hagar, bear Abraham’s child instead of waiting for the Lord to fulfill His promise. She grew jealous of Hagar and began to mistreat her, so Hagar fled. In her wandering, an angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar, instructed her to return but also acknowledged the pain of her circumstances. It is important to note that Hagar wasn’t delivered from her circumstances, but she was met by the Lord right where she was. Her response to the angel’s appearance and instructions were of great encouragement as she proclaimed, “You are the God who sees me… I have now seen the One who sees me” Genesis 16:13 NIV.
Whether you’ve traveled the road of infertility or are journeying there now, may you rest in knowing that our God who sees is with you every step of the way. His Word promises that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6) and that He is an ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). You are His beloved child.
Take Out:
Spend some quite time alone with God in prayer and ask Him to see the hurts of your heart and to give you eyes to see His love for you during this season of longing.
Dessert:
God, You are the God who sees and we praise You for that. Thank You for knowing us, intimately and meeting us right where we are. While the world seems to be celebrating, Lord, I ask that You would meet with those who are mourning, longing and praying for desires to be fulfilled. We trust You with every outcome and rest in Your love today. Amen.
