The Cure for Multitasking
 By Michelle S. Lazurek

It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables… choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.  Acts 6:2-4

Do you feel like a superwoman? Are you pressured to cook a four-course meal while keeping an immaculate house and working a full-time job?

Women were never meant to multitask. Although television shows and advertisements promote it, multitasking actually makes us less productive. Studies show the more you cram into an already overworked schedule, the less you actually accomplish.

The disciples realized there were more needs than they could handle. The twelve had to decide which would demand their specific attention and which would be better suited for the other disciples. They clearly understood which tasks they owned by their position, and empowered others to take responsibility in ministry for the tasks which fell outside of that scope. As disciples of Christ, we need that same gift of discernment.

Here are some ways to cure your need to multitask:

  • Analyze your daily to-do list - Which tasks require your sole attention? Which other tasks can you empower someone else to do?
  • Don’t be a Time Waster - Be productive. Set aside a specific amount of time to get your tasks done.  If you don’t get everything done, just move those items onto the top of your next day’s list.  When your time to accomplish tasks is over, so is your work. Relax, play and enjoy your life.
  • Take Frequent Breaks - Don’t feel guilty if you need to take a moment to yourself. This will help you keep on track to accomplish what you need to do and give you something to look forward to.

Dear Lord, help us relieve the pressure of having to complete our tasks alone.  Let us look to others to help us bear our daily burdens.  Amen.
