Which Way, Lord?
By Maria Drayton
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14 KJV
It was hard for me to make a decision. First, I wanted to go and spend a day in New York and visit the Statue of Liberty. Then, once I found out all the work that would go into planning a one day trip to the Statue of Liberty I decided against it. My once bright idea had dwindled down to a simple overnight in New York. However, I hadn’t even known how long the actual trip would take for just one night. Once I found out and realized our arrival time wouldn’t be until around 9pm, it wasn’t worth the money we would spend. A solid idea in my mind had turned out to be just that, an idea. But isn’t that how we are with God, too?
We tell Him our desires and He graciously listens but only He can see the entire picture and has decided His good and perfect will for us. Just like with God, I had told my husband my desire. In his wisdom and knowing me, he knew that I needed more information. I couldn’t see the entire picture. He even said, “You will change your mind by tomorrow.” He knew with more information, I would make a better decision.
Sometimes in life, we can’t see our way and we seek others to help us with our decisions. They may come in the form of doctors, lawyers, husbands, wives, friends and even family. This is wisdom. We are not called to know everything. But ultimately, the Lord will win out and He may even direct us to someone that will share His will for us with us.
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21 NIV
While we wait on His direction; we need to simply trust Him. Trusting Him to know the best way to go, trusting Him to see what we don’t see. This process is uncomfortable. I want to pause for a moment here and say, “It’s hard to trust someone you don’t know.” The foundation of trust in God is faith and faith is built through relationship. Relationship with the Father. Get to know Him: spend time in His Word and in His presence and experience His unfailing love, His faithfulness, His perfect will, and His ways. They are all good.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding and in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
In the end, we decided to stay local. We decided that the trip to New York was too costly and not a necessary trip at this time. I do still want to go and visit the Statue of Liberty one day but that day isn’t today. I trust that God is faithful and one day I will be at the base of the Statue of Liberty. I say the base because I am afraid of heights. Who knows, He may even give me the grace to get to the top!
Heavenly Father, Thank You for being my Abba Father. Your ways are perfect. Please help me to continue to trust in You to direct my path. Let me not be wise in my own eyes but leaning to You for all my direction. I trust that You will bring me to my expected end in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
