“Review file, legal research, execution of documents, 7/9/00, .5 hours, tab, tab, enter, enter,” I was at work entering the attorney’s time. “I’ve really got to finish God and Coffee II; I’ve really got to finish college,” I thought to myself. As I took my red pen and marked through the time entry, I moved my ruler down in order to read the next entry, and I began to type again. “Review file, legal research, telephone conference with client re: estate planning, 7/9/00, 1.2 hours, tab, tab, enter, enter.” (Who here loves their job?) I absolutely love the people I work for and with, but the work itself isn’t exactly intellectually stimulating. Sometimes, after I put the kids to bed, I simply race towards my computer in the den so that I can “write something profound, something meaningful, something thought provoking, something – anything other than “review file, legal research, execution of documents etc. etc. tab tab enter enter type type type ugh.”
The only female partner of the law firm, Dori, introduced her successful businessman husband to me one day. I stood up, shook his hand and said, “It’s very nice to meet you.” I felt a little bit like I was on a job interview. I smiled gracefully, couldn’t think of anything “great” to say, and I stood almost at a parade rest stance while she talked. “Kristina is our resident published author. She is married, has two children, goes to school, and writes books in her spare time. She is the person least likely to have any spare time, and she is the one published author in the office.”
“Oh, yes, Dori has told me about your book. I cannot wait to read it!” said her husband in a polite response. He was unlike the majority of successful businessmen that I knew. His eyes twinkled like Chris Kringle, his smile reminded me of a loving father, and as I shook his hand, I could tell that he had a big warm heart. I remember thinking to myself, “I bet he will actually read the book, I bet he will.” He was sincere and honest, and I liked him from the start.
I’m not amazing because I write books, but I am amazed when people think that I am. I am simply someone who goes to work for a bunch of wonderful people who are intellectually stimulated by their work. And the very fact that I see my bosses love their work on a daily basis makes me want to love mine as well. Have you ever seen someone do something “great” and you thought to yourself, “Hey, I could do that!”? Well, I’ve just decided to quit saying “Hey, I could to that,” and so I write books, and I am working on finishing my undergraduate degree, and I’m heading on to law school because I’ve typed “review file, execution of documents…. ” (for someone else) too many times to count. I’ve changed that sentence to, “Hey, I’m goanna do that!” Spare time has become to me, time that I can’t spare not getting where I want to be. So, whether I’m working on a book at 12:00 at night or 5:30 in the morning, or even 3:00 am, I want you to know, I’m simply tired of typing “review documents….” And I know that God will help me where I am, but He’ll also help me get somewhere else, if I ask Him.
Have you ever heard that saying, “God loves you where you are, but He loves you too much to leave you there?” More simply put, “I am just a woman who is tired of not being able to go to Wal-Mart and the grocery store in the same pay period!” May people realize that I am not amazing because I write books, but more so, may they realize that God can do amazing things with the lives that His people give back to Him.
A JOB
It’s really a job
Isn’t it some days
To make sure you glorify God
And remember to pray
I’m making it a priority
To acknowledge my Heavenly Father
Because life is too short
To simply not bother
He cares where I am what I do
What I say so every day He gives me
I wake up and pray
Good morning LORD thank you for today
May You be in all I do and think
And say
Will You please take over
So that I don’t roam
Help me not to feel
So alone
This world is big
Much bigger than me
Help others when they look at me know
It’s You that they see
I’m already tired
Please lift me up
May all that I do
Look Heavenly touched
May you get the glory
For all I do and think and say
And over and out
I’m on my way
A job is a job
Whatever you do
Ask God to help you
Think of it brand new
And whether you type
Review documents like me
Or you go to court
And have victory
Whether you are a janitor
Or a grocery store clerk
God can help you enjoy
Your work
He helps me each time I wake up
I ask Him to lead me
And refill my cup
What are the desires of your heart
Giving them to God
Is a good place to start
There’s a million jobs
To choose from out there
And I’ve asked God to change mine
Through everyday prayer
Warrior Moms, whatever your current job is – may you do it as unto the Lord, knowing full well, He’s got you covered, and He appreciates that you look to Him and work for Him in love more than you focus on working for men, women, and yes - even and especially your children.
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
Psalm 37:4-6
And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did prosper in his hand.
Genesis 39:3
