Father to the Rescue
By Darlene Franklin
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4
Some Olympic moments are frozen in time: The Miracle on Ice. Nadia Comānici’s perfect tens.
Derek Redmond’s fall and what happened after.
British Olympian Derek Redmond was a favorite to win the 400-meter race at the 1992 Games, but that’s not why we remember him. It’s what happened after he fell in the semi-finals that’s become cemented in our minds.
Though clearly hurt, he waved away a stretcher and continued limping around the track. Without warning, a figure—his father—hurried to his side. He supported his son to the finish. All eyes were riveted on the pair, the father supporting the son, united by love and grief.
That image springs to mind when I read God’s promise to carry us, and it brings me comfort.
I’ve grown old and gray, and I can testify—God sustains and rescues me. In today’s verse, I love the way God stated that part of the promise twice. He has supported me in the past and will continue to do so in the future. As the apostle Paul preached in Athens, “In Him we live and move and have our being.”
God is an inner steel core within me that sees me through tough times. When my oxygen level drops and my muscles ache, God is there. When I’m disheartened and lonely, God is there. When I’m battling the difficulties of life in a nursing home. God is there.
That same God will sustain you, whatever your circumstances.
