God Is Revealed in Creation
By Dawn Tolbert
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20
My sister called at 3 a.m. to tell me Daddy had died. I rushed to get and to my parent's house, knowing I was already too late. I told my husband I’d meet him there and stumbled out the front door into the night.
On the way to my car, I stopped in my tracks. Breath left me as I stared at the clearest night sky I’d seen in years. The stars seemed to shine extra bright, and I felt the most thorough sense of calm flood over me.
That moment came rushing back as I read today’s verse. In my moment of grief and despair, the beautiful night sky reminded me that I wasn’t without a Father who loved me, though my earthly one was gone. I felt the truth David, the ancient Hebrew, wrote in Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
Paul, the author of today’s verse and an early church planter, might have wanted the Roman church to remember those words as well when he told how our world testifies of God. Sunsets and sunrises, mountain grandeur, and vast seas all point toward the Creator and reveal His nature. In fact, Paul said nature has been revealing God since the beginning of time.
Before Scripture was recorded, creation told the story of the Creator, of the awesome, powerful, loving God who wants a relationship with us. And the message nature gives us is so clear, so that “people are without excuse.”
As we enjoy the beauty of nature, think about what it is showing us about God. And thank Him for all the ways He reveals Himself to us—through Scripture, songs, teaching, and even through the world around us.
