God Our Strength
By Darlene Franklin
“Lord, be gracious to us; we long for You. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in times of distress.” Isaiah 33:2
My son once met Arnold Schwarznegger. “Mom, his arms were huge,” he said repeatedly. I could see the truth of his statement in his pictures with the man. They took up half the tablespace; the former Terminator was an intimidating presence.
Imagine when God bares His arm for a wrestling match. Even more amazing, imagine His incomparable strength exerted on your behalf. Every obstacle pales in comparison.
The arm of God’s strength is as long as eternity and as broad as His love. He exercises it righteously. It protects us like the great wall of China, too high and broad for anyone to scale. It’s a weapon more potent than found in all the armies worldwide.
Considering this, what could we possibly have to fear?
God exercises that strength on behalf of His people in two major ways. First, He is our strength. It’s as if we glow in the dark in colors that say “That woman there, she belongs to Me.”
But God also gives us His strength. As Paul, an early church planter, said later in Philippians, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).
When trouble hits, sometimes God asks me to stand still while He fights on my behalf. Then, my biggest role is to cling to Him and shout His praise. Other times, He’ll empower and embolden me and send me out to battle. His inconquerable strength is revealed in either case.
Trusting God’s strength in the ebb and flow of daily life prepares us for those times of trouble.
