I’m His Beloved

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

Standing at the emergency door of the hospital, the lawyer handed me our infant son. As soon as I saw his angelic face, love exploded inside. I experienced a euphoria I’d never felt before or since. He didn’t do anything to earn my love, and it would be awhile before he’d be capable of reciprocating. I loved him simply because he was my son.

A parent’s love is hard to define. It’s a force that takes hold of our hearts. Some have explained it as our hearts now walking around outside of our bodies. If we, as flawed people, can love a child like that, think how our perfect heavenly Father loves us.

We’re dearly loved. He calls us His beloved. Some years ago, I woke up one morning and these words came to mind with a tune, though I’m not a musician:

“Come away my beloved, come away with me. Come away my beloved and you will see, glimpses of truth I have for you. Come away my beloved, come away.”

I knew God was asking me to rise earlier in the morning to spend time with Him in prayer and reading the Bible, His word. But what overwhelmed my heart was that He called me “Beloved.”

Is life hard? Remember: You’re God’s beloved. You’re dearly loved.

Rest in that truth.
