I’m the Light of the World - Wholly Loved - April 21

I’m the Light of the World

By Susan Aken

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

How am the light of the world? I’m a flawed, selfish creature. I fight impatience. I tend to rush through life without stopping to see the person in front of me.

Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” When I believed in Him as my Savior, His Spirit came to live in me and to be a light. Matthew tells me to let it shine. Not for me but to give glory to the Father.

It’s not easy to see the light in myself. I recently received a letter from a friend that helped me know Jesus does shine in me. She wrote, “You have been a steady and calm presence in my life. You have spent hours listening to my heartache and encouraged me to trust God even when I could not understand. You have prayed for me and loved me…I thank God for you.” This humbling letter helped me know it’s God’s Spirit working in and through me which met my friend’s need.

When we lovingly do good works in His name, He’s glorified. We act as His hands, feet, and voice in this world. As He works through us, He shines.

When I love as He loves, I’m glowing.

When I forgive, His radiance beams.

When I humble myself to serve others, He blazes.

When I give sacrificially, hearts are illuminated.

When I see and listen with a caring heart to those who are hurting, His splendor radiates into the darkness.

A lamp doesn’t shine for itself. It illuminates the path for others.

We’re the light when we live in His power not ours.

How can you glorify the Father today? Don’t hide your lamp, let everyone see.
