What Am I Filled With

“Be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18b
My heart is always filled with something. I want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. But He won’t fill me if I’m already full.
Am I filled with pride? There’s no room for Him.
Does anger consume me? Then I don’t hear His voice.
Am I trapped by unforgiveness? Then He’s grieved. (Ephesians 4:30)
Has a lust for pleasure taken over my heart? Then I push Him aside.
Am I obsessed with myself? Then I don’t see Him.
To be filled with the Holy Spirit, I need to be emptied of pride, anger, unforgiveness, self-seeking, and lust. I must be willing to let go. I’ll never be perfect. But I can choose what or whom I’ll seek. I’m able to change directions when I realize I’m headed the wrong way. Then I can look to Jesus the Author and Finisher of my faith. I can ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse me and take charge. He never forces us to yield to Him but He always responds to a sincere heart.
When I’ve grieved Him or pushed Him aside, I immediately pray and confess my sin. I seek God’s cleansing and accept His forgiveness asking the Holy Spirit to live more consistently through me. Then I walk by faith. I may have to do this multiple times each day but He is faithful and always answers.
