Let God's Love Wrap You Like a Blanket
Your Nightly Prayer for Apr. 28, 2025
By Sophia Bricker
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God ." - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
SOMETHING TO PONDER
There’s something about a blanket that evokes feelings of comfort. Maybe it’s the softness and warmth. Or maybe it’s because from infancy we receive blankets that swaddle us and later, parents tuck us in with covers to ward off the cold. A grandparent or aunt may have even knitted us a special blanket, providing a heartfelt gift that is both practical and soothing. It should be no surprise, then, that medical and disaster relief services utilize blankets to help those who are sick or have recently survived a traumatic event. Having fabric wrapped around them promotes calmness and a sense of security.
We receive a similar gift when our Lord provides us with comfort during a challenging time. He wraps us in His love, offering us His encouraging presence. Hardships cannot separate us from our Lord since He is not merely watching from afar and cheering for us. He walks beside us in the difficult situation (Psalm 23:4). The presence of our Lord consoles us, and we find the strength to keep going.
Like those medical and disaster relief workers and thoughtful family members, we can also offer comfort to others. In essence, God calls us to share the blanket of encouragement He provides so that we can, in turn, bless someone else. We can ease another person’s anxieties or sorrows by sitting with them in their pain; to weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). A person who is suffering finds encouragement from knowing that others have also walked a similar path. In this way, they experience what it looks like for believers to carry each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).
So, tonight, we can rest in the comforting presence of our Lord, knowing that this gift is meant to be shared. There may not be anyone with whom we can share encouragement right now, but the opportunities will come. And when they do, we can open our hands to share with others the comfort that God graciously gives us.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
God of all comfort,
Thank you for walking beside me in this difficulty. You have not left or forgotten me, but have encouraged me by being present in the pain. May you help me to turn to others who are hurting so I can comfort them with the comfort You provide, to show them that they are not alone. Enable me to be a light in someone else’s darkness. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. A time when the Lord encouraged you through a painful or difficult situation. How did He comfort you?
2. An item that you associate with calmness and security (e.g., a blanket, an instrument that makes soothing music, a sweater, or a cherished keepsake). Which function of the item is particularly encouraging to you?
3. Bible verses or hymns that the Lord has used to help you through a time of trouble. Is there one that stands out? If so, why?
