A Prayer for a New Purpose for a New Day

Noelle Kirchner

Purpose is something we shouldn’t live one day without. Since the beginning of our lives—in fact before we were born—God had a purpose for us. The Psalmist testifies, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb…Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13, 16). Living our God-given purpose will unlock some of the richest fulfillment that we can find on Earth—that’s the power of living in sync with our Creator.

Yet while spiritual principles are often simple, living them is not so easy. First, discerning our purpose and following through takes effort and discipline. I explore six steps that can help in my new book on life purpose. Second, there are times when we might need a fresh dose of purpose. Maybe we are facing a change and need reassurance. Maybe we have been blindsided by loss and our life plan feels upside-down. Or maybe we simply need a reminder of what God has whispered to our heart and the inspiration to keep going.

If you are coming to the Father needing to connect with your purpose or find encouragement, I invite you to pray this prayer with me:

A Prayer for New Purpose for a New Day

Loving Creator,

I affirm that you created me with a purpose that began before I was born.

You have numbered each hair on my head (Luke 12:7).

Scripture tells of how you long to cradle me under your wings like a mother hen (Matt. 23:37).

Remind me of your devoted care and reveal your intention for my life.

Gentle Potter,

I know that you are shaping me.

Sometimes I feel your watchful hand upon me, and sometimes it feels like I am broken in pieces on the floor.

I affirm that you know how to put every piece of me together. Help me to see myself as you see me—as your masterpiece.

I offer the clay of my life into your wise hands (Isaiah 64:8).

Trustworthy Savior,

You know what it means to suffer disappointment and pain, but through your blood runs resurrection hope.

The hope that you provide is always alive, and it is stronger than any transition, fear, or darkest night (Ephesians 1:18–21).

Use my strengths and transform my wounds into effective tools for you—tools that are reflective of my purpose and illustrative of your power.

Abba Father,

You know me intimately and pull me close.

While you are my truest Friend, sometimes I feel lonely and abandoned.

Startle me with your goodness. Convince my doubting head of what my heart already knows.

Help me find amazement in your plan for me like the dawning of a new day as you warm me with your presence (Psalm 46:5).

Life Everlasting,

While you nourish me beside the quiet waters, you also propel me forward for your sake (Psalm 23:2–3).

Enable me to take new ground for you.

Your purpose for me is the most fulfilling version of my life. Deepen my trust in you, for I give you the concerns of my heart, and reveal your abundance.

May my life be a testimony to your promises, bringing glory to you now and in the life to come.

Giver of Gifts,

Thank you for the good gifts that you have given me (James 1:17).

As I delight in your blessings, I remember the story of Abraham: May I be blessed to be a blessing (Genesis 12:2).

Thank you for the ways that you have already been faithful and advanced your purpose through me.

I pray with confidence in the name of your Son, Jesus, whose mighty purpose still transforms the world. Amen.”

Living your life purpose is not a trivial pursuit. It’s living the life your heart beats for. It’s living the life destined for you by the Creator. Use this prayer as an opportunity to invite his presence and renewed purpose into your day. Whatever you are facing, remember that the Lord your God hears your prayer and is with you—the Mighty Warrior who saves (Zeph. 3:17)!
