5 Prayers to Pray Over Your House

By praying over your house, you’re welcoming God’s loving power into it. Here’s what the Bible says about blessing your home, and how to pray over your house.

You and your family probably spend more time at home than anywhere else. It’s important for your house to be a peaceful place that provides a spiritually healthy environment for all of you. One vital way to foster a healthy home atmosphere is to pray over your home. Prayer is powerful. By praying over your house, you’re welcoming God’s loving power into it. Here’s what the Bible says about blessing your home, and how to pray over your house.

Does the Bible Talk about How to Pray Over Your House?

The Bible talks about the importance of having a peaceful home, and using prayer as a way to bring peace to a house. In Isaiah 32:18, God declares: “My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” Jesus instructs his disciples in Luke 10:5-6, “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.” In 2 Samuel 7:29, the Bible mentions a house blessing: “Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

Dedicating your house to God through faith is also important, the Bible says. Joshua 24:15 mentions a household choosing to serve God: “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve ... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Psalm 127:1 uses the imagery of a house to describe why a strong foundation in faith is vital: “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain…” In Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus explains the importance of a strong faith foundation using house imagery: “…everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Bible verses also mention God blessing personal homes and houses of worship where faithful people are, while turning away from places where people are unholy. Proverbs 3:33 says, “The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.” After Solomon dedicated a temple to God, in 2 Chronicles 7:14-16 God spoke to Solomon about consecrating a place: “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer of this place. So now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My name be there continually. My eyes and heart will be there for all days.”

How to Pray Over Your House

There are many ways you can choose to pray over your house. You may simply say a blessing for your home overall, thank God for your home through a gratitude prayer, ask God for spiritual protection on your house, or walk through each room of your home to say a prayer there. While you’re praying, you can use physical tools to help you focus, such as lighting candles in each room, placing a cross in front of you, or opening windows for fresh air. But all that’s really necessary is connecting with God. Don’t worry about trying to follow any formula for praying over your house. Instead, pray in whatever ways come most naturally to you. Your goal is just to seek God’s blessing for your home.

You can certainly pray over your house by yourself. However, if the other people in your household are willing to pray with you, that can be a powerful time of shared prayer. Jesus promises in Matthew 18:20: “For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.” Praying as a family over your home can bring you all closer together. In my book Wake Up to Wonder, I describe well-being research that shows the benefits of worship practices like prayer with others, including greater peacefulness, stronger relationships, and more compassion for each other.

No matter how you choose to pray over your house, by choosing to pray over it, you’re pursuing the wisdom that God wants you to build. Proverbs 24:3-4 uses the imagery of a house to describe that wisdom: “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

5 Prayers to Pray Over Your House

Here are five different prayers to pray over your house. Feel free to personalize them for you and your family.

“Dear God, please bless our home. Send your Holy Spirit into every space throughout our house. May this be a holy place that is consecrated to you. Help us to be faithful to you in what we say and do here. We choose relationships with you, just as you choose relationships with us. Amen.”

“Heavenly father, thank you for your great love that sustains our family. Please fill our home with your love. Help each of us to open ourselves up to your love day by day, and allow your love to flow through our lives to each other. Empower us to take that love out of our home and into the world, to share it with everyone we meet. Thank you, God. We love you. Amen.”

“Holy God, please guard our home through the power of your Holy Spirit. Cast out all evil from this space. Send your holy angels to our house whenever we need them. Please make this a place of strong faith that repels what is bad and embraces what is good, as we trust in you. Amen.”

“Wonderful God, we’re grateful for your work in our lives that inspires us with awe. Help us notice your wonderful work around us here at home. Wake us up to what you’re doing in our relationships. As we look for signs of your love you during our daily lives here, meet us where we are and help us connect with you. Thank you, and we love you. Amen.”

“God, thank you for your constant presence with us. As we walk through each room in our house, please bless every space we go to: our living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, basement, attic, garage, and every other room. May every part of our home be consecrated to you and reflect your love. Thank you, God. Amen.”
