5 Spiritual Disciplines for the New Year

Don’t lose heart if you find it hard to sense God's presence; just keep going, as consistency is crucial in this spiritual journey.

Thank goodness it's January once more. The sparkle of Christmas is stored away, the holiday sweets are becoming less tempting, and that list of New Year's resolutions you crafted with enthusiasm now appears more like a mountain than a small hill.

This year, I chose to set aside the usual resolutions and concentrate on something deeper: my connection with God. I experienced a strong desire for rejuvenation, a longing for something deeper than superficial alterations.

It was then that I realized the profound impact of spiritual practices. Perhaps you experience that longing as well. This year, rather than merely hoping for spiritual growth, let’s intentionally foster it.

Here are several disciplines we need to embrace if we genuinely wish to start a path of spiritual change:

1. A Life of Prayer: Our Lifeline to God

In this new year, we need to begin a life devoted to prayer. Our prayers should be sincere, genuine, and deeply felt. Whether it's a soft thank you or a desperate plea for assistance, this is what is truly important.

Begin with a small gesture—maybe just a few minutes every morning—dedicating your day to God's guidance. Allow prayer to integrate into your everyday existence through expressions of thankfulness, brief appeals for direction, and serene times of connection.

You need to abandon your previous mindset about prayer and view it as a dialogue, not a speech. Pay attention to God's voice in the still moments, within the scriptures, and through the happenings around you.

Don’t lose heart if you find it hard to sense God's presence; just keep going, as consistency is crucial in this spiritual journey.

By diligently maintaining this bond, you'll find a profound enhancement of your faith and an increasing closeness with your Creator. Recall James 5:16: "The heartfelt and powerful prayer of a righteous individual achieves great results."

2. Fasting: A Spiritual Discipline of Self-Denial

An additional element we need to examine for our spiritual practice is fasting. Fasting, whether from meals, social media, or other delights, is a strong method to cultivate spiritual discipline and enhance our reliance on God.

We need to recognize that fasting isn't just about giving up impossible things but is, instead a shift, focusing less on our wants and more on God.

Consequently, a fast might involve simply refraining from a certain food for one day or reducing your social media activity for a week.

We fast to make room for prayer, reflection, and heightened awareness of God's presence. While fasting, we respectfully recognize our reliance on Him and seek His direction in every aspect of our lives.

Fasting allows us to undergo a spiritual awakening. It's an opportunity to reevaluate your priorities and release anything that could be pulling you away from your connection with God.

3. Journaling: Capturing Your Spiritual Journey

It is important to keep journals as Christians since it helps us document our spiritual growth and God's influence in our lives. Journaling also provides a space for reflection, where we can record our prayers, knowledge of the Bible, and the lessons we’ve acquired throughout our Christian journey.

You don't have to stress about flawless writing; just express yourself genuinely. Express your innermost feelings, your thoughts, and your emotions onto the paper.

By doing this, you will be able to gain priceless understanding regarding your spiritual development, and journaling will assist you in recognizing the areas that need growth and those where God is already working mightily in your life.

Additionally, the wonderful aspect of journaling is that revisiting previous entries acts as a strong reminder of God’s faithfulness and provision. Therefore, maintain your journal as a continuous documentation of your remarkable spiritual journey.

4. Service/Acts of Kindness: Extending God's Love

Another spiritual discipline we all need to learn is to show God’s love to those around us. As true sons and daughters of the Most High God, we must learn to extend kindness to everyone. Remember, Jesus stated in Matthew 25:40, "As you have done it to one of the least of these, my brothers, you have done it to me." So, by helping those in need, we ultimately demonstrate our love for God.

Make this a habit and a practical way to share God's love and grace with everyone. We can express God's love by volunteering at a local soup kitchen, visiting the sick, or assisting a neighbor in need.

You might be surprised to learn that simple acts of kindness, such as opening a door, lending a listening ear, or giving a genuine compliment, can have an impact. And, as Christians, by serving others, we not only bring them blessings but greatly enhance our own lives.

5. Silence and Solitude: Creating Space for God's Voice

It is well known that the modern world is full of distractions and can be extremely overwhelming if we attempt to keep up. We can easily lose touch with our inner selves and our relationship with God in the midst of life's hectic pace.

This is the point at which silence and solitude become essential. Silence and solitude serve as spiritual practices that provide us with shelter from the world's distractions; they establish an environment where we can listen to God's voice more distinctly.

I’m not suggesting a complete separation from our neighbors or the world; instead, we should deliberately carve out moments for peaceful contemplation and prayer. It might be a stroll through the fields, a peaceful moment at home, or perhaps a brief pause from your regular activities.

In these instances, attempt to calm your thoughts and welcome God's presence into your heart. Tune in to His gentle direction, God's affectionate murmurs, His quiet, subtle voice communicating with your spirit.

Setting Spiritual Goals for the New Year

This year, let's eliminate the guilt and welcome the journey! Rather than aiming for perfection, we ought to prioritize progress. Let’s establish practical, attainable objectives.

Begin with one or two spiritual practices instead of attempting to include them all simultaneously. For instance, dedicate 15 minutes each morning to prayer or read a chapter of scripture daily.

Once those routines are set, you can slowly incorporate additional practices. Additionally, remember to monitor your advancement, acknowledge your successes, and feel free to modify your objectives when necessary.

Keep in mind that spiritual development is an ongoing process throughout life rather than a competition (Philippians 3:13-14)

Your Relationship with God in Improving the New Year

The main reason for the spiritual practices I have been discussing is to strengthen our connection with God. It’s intended to assist us in transcending a transactional view of faith and developing a deep, lasting love.

Spiritual practices offer routes to a close connection with the divine; they assist us in understanding God more profoundly, listening to His voice more distinctly, and existing in better alignment with His desires.

It's about daily dedication, purposeful moments in His presence, and a heart receptive to His life-changing love. And trust me, as you develop these practices, you'll find a deep sense of tranquility, meaning, and happiness—a genuine change that surpasses simple resolutions.

As I mentioned before, this is not a short race; it's a long-distance run. This path of belief will reveal itself differently for everyone. Welcome to the adventure!

This new year, instead of merely setting resolutions, let's develop a stronger connection with God by practicing spiritual disciplines. Let’s welcome the path of spiritual growth, one step at a time.
