5 Ways to Be A Blessing to Others This Holiday Season

The holiday season is the perfect time to be a blessing to others. Jesus gave us the greatest blessing when He took on human flesh in order to be born into the world and to die for our sins. Christmas is the anniversary of Jesus’ advent to earth. Therefore, it is only normal for us to also want to be blessings to others this holiday season just as Jesus is a blessing to us.

Here are five ways to be a blessing to others this holiday season:

1. Go Visit an Elderly Neighbor

One way to be a blessing to others this holiday season is to visit an elderly neighbor. Most of us have an elderly neighbor who lives near us. Sadly, many elderly neighbors don’t have people who check in on them. You can be a blessing in their life this holiday season by going to visit them. Don’t treat it as something just to check off your to-do list. Be intentional about going to see them and set out a few hours to spend with them. It could be that your elderly neighbor rarely has anyone to talk to and will really enjoy your company.

Unfortunately, not many people go out of their way to help their elderly neighbors. You can change this trend by taking some time out of your day this holiday to visit an elderly neighbor. When you go to visit your elderly neighbor, bring them a gift or cook them a warm meal. This can make them feel cared for and loved even more. Don’t forget how much your small acts of kindness can make a world of difference in someone’s life.

2. Make a Get-well Basket

A second way to be a blessing to others this holiday season is to make a get-well basket for a sick friend. Wintertime is a common time for many of us to catch colds. When we have a cold, it can be hard to feel up to doing anything. If you know a friend has recently gotten sick, make them a get-well basket and take it over to them. If they are sick with something extremely contagious, such as the flu or COVID-19, mail it to them in order to not spread the virus further. Even if you can’t be with your friends in person, they will appreciate the get-well basket and the time you put into it.

Some ideas to include in your get-well basket can be a blanket, soup, a plush animal, body wash, lotion, tea bags, and more. These are only ideas as you can choose whatever you think your friend might need or want at the present time. The idea is to try to get things that will help your friend feel better. You know your friends well, therefore, you know what kind of things will make them smile when they are not feeling the best. Try to make a get-well basket for a sick friend this holiday season and you will surely be a blessing in their life.

3. Donate the Coats You Don't Need Anymore

A third way to be a blessing to others this holiday season is to donate the coats you don’t need anymore. Most organizations offer a clothing drive where you can donate any gently used clothes you don’t need. During the wintertime, they are mainly looking for coats and socks since it is colder. Many impoverished and homeless families don’t have warm coats for the winter. By donating the coats you don’t need anymore or other winter clothes, you can be a blessing to them this holiday season.

Go through your closet and see if there is anything that doesn’t fit you anymore, you don’t want, or something you just don’t like to wear. If any of your coats or clothing fits this description, donate it. It might be hard to part ways with some of your clothing, but remind yourself it is going to someone who really needs it. There are many people who need warm clothing this year but simply do not have the funds to go out and purchase warm coats and socks and shoes. You can be a blessing to them by freely donating the coats and other warm clothes you don’t need anymore.

4. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen

A fourth way to be a blessing to others this holiday season is to volunteer at a soup kitchen. While this might not sound like the most glamorous thing to do, it is something that can really help others. In this way, you will be a blessing to others. Soup kitchens are where people go for food when they don’t have enough money to purchase their own food. By volunteering at a soup kitchen, not only will you be a blessing to them this holiday season, but you will also cultivate a heart of thankfulness.

The people at the soup kitchen are thankful for the food they have, which can make you thankful for the things in your life. Many of us don’t treat food as something that is going to be endangered or something that we don’t have access to. However, there are many people in our own cities who don’t know when their next meal will be. Volunteering at a soup kitchen can help you cultivate a heart of thankfulness for all the things in life, even the little things, which are not as little as we once thought.

5. Go Out of Your Way to Show Jesus to Someone

A fifth way to be a blessing to others this holiday season is to go out of your way to show Jesus to someone. This might be one of the more challenging ways to be a blessing to someone, but it is very rewarding. You can show Jesus in your actions this holiday season by buying the person behind you their coffee for them, taking time out of your day to spend with someone who is struggling with their mental health, or taking care of your friend’s children when they need to run errands. These are but a few ideas of how you can be the hands and feet of Jesus to someone this holiday season.

Think of some of your own ideas and see what other things you can do to show Jesus to someone. Jesus is full of kindness, peace, and love. Therefore, when you are trying to share Jesus in your actions, make sure they are filled with all of these qualities. Jesus never did anything begrudgingly or for the purpose of being praised. Rather, He did the wonderful things He did because He wanted to. In the same way, we need to follow His example and do everything out of a heart of love.

The holiday season is the perfect time to share Jesus’ love with people as well as it is the perfect time to share the Good News of the Lord. It could be in your interactions of showing Jesus to people this holiday season that you will also be able to share the Gospel with them. Even if they don’t accept Jesus right away, know that you have shared the Gospel with them and left them with an impactful message of Jesus’ love for them. Never underestimate how you can be a blessing in someone’s life this holiday season!
