"Abortion has never been foundational in the history of the United States, with Roe v Wade only beginning in 1973..."
Christians across the nation gather for worship today to praise God, giving Him the glory for Friday’s landmark Supreme Court decision on Roe v Wade. On June 24, 2022, The United States Supreme Court overturned the controversial ruling of Roe v Wade in a six to three decision. According to Fox News, today’s decision came in the court’s opinion of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization based on a Mississippi law that banned abortions after the fifteenth week of pregnancy.
What Does This Mean?
This decision ends the nation’s recognition that abortion is a Constitutional right, and it returns the power to individual states to allow, limit, or ban abortions.
Justice Samuel Alito stated that the court’s opinion recognized the Fourteenth Amendment’s due process clause has been found to guarantee certain rights not spelled out in the United States Constitution. He continued by saying that those rights must be deeply rooted in our nation’s history and tradition, which abortion is not. Abortion has never been foundational in the history of the United States, with Roe v Wade only beginning in 1973, according to Fox News. *
Moving Forward
Despite this phenomenal victory, the fight isn’t over. Pro-life advocates must work in their states to ensure that unborn lives will be protected.
Fox News reports that thirteen states are ready to take immediate action on their abortion laws, and thirteen more may soon follow.
What Does God Say?
In Psalm 139:13, the psalmist says:
"For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb."
We cannot deny the truth of this verse. God knits each child together in the womb with as much care as He used when He formed Eve from Adam’s rib. The womb should be the safest place for a child, but sadly, it has become one of the most dangerous. David continued by saying:
"My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:15-16 NIV)
Here, David reiterated that God fashioned us in the womb, but he allows us to realize that God has written His purpose for us in His book. God has ordained and ordered our lives before we were ever born. He knew that on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court would make this landmark decision, and He even knew I’d write this article. Like the psalmist, I rejoice in God’s thoughts towards me.
We find similar language penned by the prophet Jeremiah:
"The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.'” (Jeremiah 1:4-5 NIV)
Obviously, life begins at conception, and taking a life is murder in God’s eyes (Ex. 20:13, Matt. 5:21).
God Does Forgive
Perhaps you have had an abortion, and you wonder if God can ever forgive you. God loves you, and we are all sinners. Jesus Christ died on Calvary’s cross to pay your sin debt. Yes, His blood covers your abortion when you trust in Him as your Lord and Savior.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9 NIV)
Paul wrote:
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23 NIV)
God offers the free gift of salvation to all who turn to Him in true faith. After trusting Christ, you are guaranteed to one day be joined with your child in heaven to spend all of eternity together.
You can repent with a heart-felt prayer such as this: "Heavenly Father, I am a sinner, and I have committed sins that grieve You. Today, I give You my life, and I seek to serve Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Please save me and forgive me. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Welcome to the family of God!
