10 Ways Our God Is Greater And Why That's So Great

We the finite cannot by nature grasp One who is infinite. Though we try to put words to it, though we try to wrap our mind around it, how can we who live with limits understand One who is without limit? God is so great that we can spend our lives getting to know him and still there is more. The unlimited, infinite God has chosen to reveal himself to us. He’s declared who he is in scripture. “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever.” Deut. 29:29

God is uncreated. Though He created everything on this earth, the galaxies, the oxygen for our lungs, you, me, the angels and demons and Satan, God himself is uncreated. He has always been.

When God confronted Moses in the inconsumable fire of the burning bush, Moses asked for God’s name. God answered with a declaration of who he is. “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.’” God revealed himself as uncreated and self-existent. God has no beginning and nothing came before him. That alone is reason for us to worship him and yet there’s more.

God is complete in himself and has no needs. He experienced complete fellowship in the trinity eons before earth was created. Spurgeon says, “God is and has always been perfectly happy and perfectly glorious long before wing of angel moved in space or time existed.”

Despite our egos, God doesn’t need us. He didn’t create us because he was lonely or bored. He doesn’t need our worship and we can add nothing to his glory. If not one person ever believed in God it wouldn’t change him in the least. Our failure to pray? It only hurts us. Our sin? It only hurts us. Our lack of trust? It only hurts us. God doesn’t need our prayer, our obedience or our faith and yet he calls for it because he knows it’s good for us.

We live in a world of change – job moves, opinion shifts, relationship changes. But God is a rock and never changes. “For I am the Lord, I change not…” Malachi 3:6. And Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

To change means to become more than or less than and because God is perfect, he doesn’t need to change. This means God’s will never changes and his promises cannot change. His truth is fixed regardless of popular opinion and God’s feelings toward us never change. He doesn’t love us when we obey or once we trust him. God has always loved us and proved it on the cross.

God is eternal which means that he exists outside of our time limitations. “In the beginning, God created,” and one of the first things he created is time. He governs time.

God lives outside of created time – in what is referred to as the everlasting now. He lives in the past, present and future all at once. He’s present in all our tomorrows – that unknown diagnosis, that relationship that’s teetering, that financial challenge we’re up against. We can trust God’s guidance because he’s already there. He knew us before we were born and he knows every day of our life.

There is nothing God needs to learn; nothing he has yet to discover. When God guides us, he does so in perfect knowledge. We may walk by faith but we follow God who already knows what’s ahead. Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.”

We can’t keep secrets from him and no one can tattle on us to him. He already knows! That skeleton we’ve got buried deep? God knows. And still he loves us. When we confess our sin, we’re not informing God; we’re conforming our heart to his through repentance.

We often seek answers from many places, but only God has the wisdom we need. Isaiah 55 says, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  God is infinitely wise. In fact, we can’t even imagine the ways God will work.

God’s wisdom provides practical guidance and direction. I cannot tell you how many times as a single mom I’ve cried out for God’s wisdom over my children, decisions, and finances. Sure enough, God always gives the wisdom needed. He promises it.

We know that God is faithful and yet don’t always feel that faithfulness when our circumstances are hard. But God’s character is constant even when our circumstances aren’t. It’s not that he chooses to be faithful. He can be nothing else. As sure as the sun will rise, God is faithful.

None of us goes to bed waiting to see if the sun will rise the next morning to make plans. We know the sun will rise! It’s not even a thought. And so, in full confidence of that sunrise, we plan the next day. That is God’s faithfulness. We don’t have to wring hands or worry if he’ll come through. We can count on the constancy of God’s faithfulness.

God is good and God does good. God is the source of everything good and the measure by which we can even know what good is. It’s easy enough to say that God is good when life is going well, but what about when we’re in the midst of severe trial? When we’re under the weight of what-if’s and what now’s?

That’s when we need to see God’s goodness more than ever. Nothing happens to us that doesn’t first come through God’s good hand. If God has allowed it, it’s for good because God cannot do evil. And even in trials, God’s goodness is all around us. When my husband died unexpectedly, life felt anything but good and yet we had constant reminders of God’s goodness in the hard.

Over and over, scripture tells us that all things are possible with God. Think someone’s too far from God? God can save him. Think our mess is too tangled for God? God can bring beauty where there are ashes. We consider things as easy or hard and it keeps us from faith-filled prayers and relying on God’s promises. But there is no hard or easy for God. It’s done or not done.

Amazingly, the all-powerful God chooses to dwell in the hearts of believers and to work through believers. And just when we start to wrap our minds around God’s limitless power, we’re back where we started -- the incomprehensibility of God. Scripture tells us God is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”
