5 Ways to Reignite Your Prayer Life

Reigniting your prayer life may sound like a difficult task, but it doesn’t have to be. It is important to have a healthy prayer life because it will help you grow in your walk with Christ. Without reigniting your prayer life, it could cause a lack of spiritual fruit in your life or it could distance you from God.

Here are five ways to reignite your prayer life:

1. Spend Uninterrupted Time with God

One way to reignite your prayer life is to spend uninterrupted time with God. Spending uninterrupted time with God will help your prayer life in many ways. When I was struggling in my prayer life, I didn’t know what to do. I felt distant from God, and I felt as though my Christian walk wasn’t as strong. After talking with a trusted Christian friend, they recommended spending at least 30 minutes a day talking with God in prayer.

This time was to be uninterrupted, meaning no phone, no email, and no other people to distract you. Marking out time each day to spend with God uninterrupted really reignited my prayer life. It helped me be more open and honest with God. Instead of reciting the same prayers over and over again, I was finally able to be open with my feelings, emotions, and struggles. I no longer felt I had a small interval of time to spend with God. Instead, I had an abundant, marked-out time to spend time with God each day.

The practice of spending time with God continues to help me in my walk with Christ. I no longer feel as though I am distant from God. Now, I feel He is right there with me as I pray, and He is right there with you too. Even if you are short on time, there is much you can do to have enough time to spend with God uninterrupted. You can talk with God on your commute to work, while you are walking, or when you are by yourself in the middle of the night. God wants to hear from you, and there is never a “bad” time.

2. Read the Bible Daily

A second way to reignite your prayer life is to read the Bible daily. Reading your Bible daily can help you realign your prayers with the Lord. Often, we find ourselves praying for things that are not in alignment with God’s will. Some of these things can be praying for a fancy car, a huge house, or becoming wealthy. While these things are popular to ask for, we have to understand God is not some sort of magical genie. Rather, He is our Heavenly Father, and He is only going to answer prayers that are in His will.

As you read your Bible daily, you will start to learn more about God and His nature. You’ll quickly see that praying for things such as growth in the Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit are more of the prayers God will answer. Praying for material things that are not needed won’t help your prayer life either because it only shows you are not getting to know God or understanding Him. Commit yourself to reading the Bible daily and it will help you reignite your prayer life as well as it will help you start praying for the right things.

3. Make a Prayer Closet

A third way to reignite your prayer life is to make a prayer closet. The results are long-lasting. You can make a prayer closet even if you don’t have a closet. Just find a small to midsize place in your house where you can pray to God. The idea of a prayer closet became popular after the film War Room came out. You can watch the movie and pattern your own prayer room after it, or you could be creative and make your own.

My sister made her own prayer closet a few years ago, but it wasn’t your typical prayer closet. She set up her tent in the house, and she went into the tent to have her prayer time with the Lord. Even though she doesn’t use her tent anymore as her prayer closet, it was useful to her for the time being. A tent might not be the most applicable of prayer closets, but it could be a good idea if you also have a tent. Whether you choose an actual closet or an individual place somewhere in your house, it is something that can help you reignite your prayer life.

Use post-it notes or a sticky pad to write down all of the people you are praying for. You could also write down specific Bible verses that are a source of encouragement. A prayer closet can cause you to be excited to pray each day. If you are creative, you probably will have even more fun decorating and designing your prayer closet. No matter how you choose to design your prayer closet, or what it is, it is sure to help reignite your prayer life.

4. Have a Prayer Buddy

A fourth way to reignite your prayer life is to have a prayer buddy. A prayer buddy is someone who can pray for you as well as help you pray for others. They can also hold you accountable to make sure you are praying daily. When you choose a prayer buddy, choose someone who is a strong Christian, someone you’ve known for a while, and someone who also desires to strengthen their own prayer life. Maybe a few people come to mind when you think of these things. Reach out to them and see if they would agree to be your prayer buddy.

When you have a prayer buddy, they will be able to help, support, and encourage you. You might feel overwhelmed at times with trying to reignite your prayer life, yet if you have a prayer buddy, they can help the experience be more fun. Praying is fun and fulfilling; however, if you only pray out of obligation, you will lose the joy that is offered through praying. A prayer buddy can help bring back the joy.

5. Challenge Yourself to Pray Throughout the Day

A fifth way to reignite your prayer life is to challenge yourself to pray throughout the day. The Apostle Paul tells us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This might sound difficult, but it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to pray throughout the day and to keep your mind focused on the Lord. Whenever a worry or stressful thought comes to mind, go to God in prayer. In the same way, when something positive happens, go to God in prayer and praise Him.

You could also set a reminder on your phone to make sure you pray throughout the day. You could spread it across a few hours each day or you could be intuitive and just pray when you feel you want to. There is no right or wrong way when you are trying to pray throughout the day. What is important is that you are keeping Jesus at the front of your mind and you are going to Him whether things are good or not. All of this can help you reignite your prayer life and grow closer to God.
