In these turbulent times, America stands at a crossroads. We face division and challenges that seem insurmountable. The divide between our country's two largest political ideologies continues to grow, with Americans becoming more extreme in their views, fueled by social media and misinformation. 

The recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has only heightened the fears that grip our country. Yet, as people of faith, we know that our way of participating in God's work is through prayer. Prayer is not merely a passive activity but an active engagement with the Almighty, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and peace.

The Power of Prayer

The Bible reminds us of the profound impact of prayer. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, we are assured: 

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 


This verse is a clarion call for us to come together in humility and supplication, trusting that God will respond to our earnest prayers.

This verse is also a formula: 1) humble yourself, 2) seek His face, and 3) turn from your wicked ways (repent).  THEN He will hear us from heaven, forgive, and heal our land.

So, Republicans and Democrats, who's ready to admit their political view isn't perfect (humble yourself), seek the face of God (through worship and prayer), and repent! Furthermore, 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us: 

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." 

This passage emphasizes the importance of praying for our leaders, regardless of our political affiliations, so that our nation might enjoy peace and righteousness. This is our moment to demonstrate to the world that Christians are united under the banner of prayer for both former President Trump and President Biden.

4 Prayers Historical American Leaders Have Prayed for Our Nation

Throughout history, American presidents have turned to prayer in times of national crisis and need. 

  • George Washington: "Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large."
  • Abraham Lincoln: "I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for that day."


  • Thomas Jefferson: "Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners."
  • Ronald Reagan: On the National Day of Prayer in 1983, President Ronald Reagan offered a heartfelt prayer for the nation: "We pray for all who serve in this House and the Senate and for the President and the Vice President, and all who serve with them, that we may ever be worthy in our service to our land."

Winston Churchill's Famous Prayer for Peace

Winston Churchill, though not an American leader, is remembered for his inspirational speeches and writings during challenging times. One of his notable prayers, which happens to be a favorite of mine, is as follows:

"O Lord, save us all from the fear of the unknown. Give us peace of mind and peace of heart, that we may live our lives with a quiet courage, seeking Your will, serving Your purpose, and resting secure in Your love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

As we humble ourselves before God, we can trust in His promise to heal our land and guide us through these challenging times. Let us approach the coming months with "a quiet courage," standing for unity over division and peace over conflict. May our prayers serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to our faith in His enduring grace and sovereignty.

A Prayer Against Division

Heavenly Father, we come before You in humble prayer, seeking unity in our nation during these tumultuous times. We ask that You heal the divisions among us, fostering a spirit of collaboration and understanding. Help us to remember Your word in Ephesians 4:3, urging us to 

"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." 

May we be peacemakers, bridging gaps and extending grace to one another, reflecting Your love in all we do. Guide our hearts and minds towards reconciliation and harmony to stand united under Your banner. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Our Leaders

Gracious God, we lift up the leaders of our nation, both current and aspiring, seeking Your divine guidance and wisdom. May they act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You, as You have called us to do in Micah 6:8. Grant them the courage to lead with integrity, the wisdom to seek justice, and the compassion to serve with mercy. In these challenging times, let their decisions reflect Your will and bring about peace and unity. Surround them with wise counsel and protect them from harm, so that they may govern with righteousness and lead our nation towards a brighter future. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

A Prayer for a Peaceful Election

Heavenly Father, as our nation approaches the upcoming election season, we come to You seeking peace and calm. Your word in Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to 

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." 

Lord, we ask for Your peace to envelop our hearts and minds, dispelling fear and anxiety. May the electoral process be carried out with integrity and respect, and may Your peace prevail in every community across our land. Guide us to be peacemakers, fostering harmony and understanding, trusting in Your sovereign plan. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
