Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. – 1 John 4:7

That heartwarming sensation of joy and affection that tells us that we are in love usually comes first when we become parents. God designed us so that we make instant connections with our children because he knows that unbreakable bond is meant to hold us tightly connected over a lifetime. As we grow as parents and believers we learn that God’s love is more than that joy felt when we smell our newborn or count their perfect fingers and toes. The love of Christ is a guiding, sustaining, and transforming force in our homes.

In every new stage and phase as parents we must learn to rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us as we model God’s true love as the spiritual shepherd of our kids. When we become parents through more challenging circumstances such as foster care, kinship care, adoption, and more we also need the Spirit to inspire a love that covers the many losses that make this family dynamic necessary. We need God’s gentle leading as we are God’s love embodied for our children.
